In the book The Glass Castle there were a lot of themes. Broken promises were one of the themes; Rex made a promise to protect his family, build a glass castle, and even bring his family to fortune. For example Rex pimps out his own daughter to manipulate a guy for 80 dollars in a game of pool. Also he promised Jeannette that he would stop drinking on her 10th birthday, but couldn´t last a year; after his mother died he disappeared for a while getting wasted in the bar.

This theme tends to talk about forgiveness and how Jeannette forgives Rose Mary and Rex, but she forgives Rex the most because both Jeannette and Rex have a special connection between them two.Whenever Rex messes up and nobody shows him forgiveness or love, so he turns to Jeannette to sugar coat him knowing that she will never be mad at him. On page 174 Rose Mary claims that why the children forgive their father when he messes up but won´t forgive her for just hiding chocolate.

The kids have a hard time to fit in with the other kids because of their life style and their appearance. The other kids tend to bully the Walls kids because of how skinny they were, how they were dressed and how nasty and unclean they were. Until towards the end of the book Jeannette joins her school newspaper club; their she felt welcomed, she felt that she actually had a reason to go and participate or be in the school activities or performance.

The Walls kids were forced to pretend that their life was full of amazings discoveries and full of adventure; when clearly they were put through hell and suffered a lot from exposed to many threats in the environment they used to live in. During their time in Welch both Rex and Rose Mary had a lot of operntunities to get a job and help the family get back at their feet but rather both waste their time doing other things that were more important to them.

The kids tend to look out for themselves in every situation they are given. Like Jeanette how in the beginning of the story she had to cook for herself , she caught fire went to the hospital and even came back home to cook some more again. In the book Rex exclaims that brain is old enough to look after himself when Erma sexually insulted him. Even in school when Rose Mary forgets to pack them lunch Jeannette would build the courage to go through the trash bin and find food.
