Create a post with a link to at least one online tool that you have used or would like to use in your teaching. Consider the nature of the online tool(s) that you have chosen, and whether it facilitates synchronous or asynchronous communication, and reflect on the pros and cons of using such a tool in your practice.

I'm very intrigued by Canvas Studio and creating interactive videos. With this tool I've learned that you can create informative videos or use pre-existing videos and incorporate quizzes into the video.

I believe this would be a good form of asynchronous learning as students could do this in their own time.

I believe some of the pros could be student engagement, finding out if students are struggling with content ahead of time, freeing up space on the timetable (rather than face-to-face lectures), having content that could be used if still relevant for years (future time-saving) and giving real-time feedback.

However, some of the cons may be technology issues for students, having access to technology, content may not being inclusive yet (I believe I was told today that subtitle function is coming soon), and potential extra-workload for students.

We have used this as a form of assessment. It provides the ability to engage in trial-and-error learning and an excellent opportunity to deepen understanding of biochemistry concepts and practical skills prior to real-world activity. Furthermore, it can combine theoretical content with hands-on virtual practice which can (to some extent) mirror real-world applications. Still you cannot replace technical skills requiring dexterity with something virtual (mouse+keyboard), you can just bridge this gap, so transition from theory to practice is smoother.

I have used Mentimeter in my teaching to engage students with multiple-choice questions (https://www.mentimeter.com/). We practiced key steps in calculations or core concepts. It captures students’ attention effectively. However, it requires students to open another platform, which could be a bit inconvenient. For online teaching, Zoom polls might be a more straightforward tool (achieving a similar purpose without additional logins).

OpenShot Video Editor is a free video editor that allows slice and stitch video segments, adding special effects, multimedia-compatible video editing tool.

I found that recording small video segments works better than a lengthy one, that allows for updates on specific segments without complete rework on the whole video. It's easy to use with lots of YouTube tutorials. All the features with no strings attached makes it accessible albeit a bit slow at merging segments and sometimes glitches do happen, but that's the little 'price' you pay.

OpenShot facilitates asynchronous learning, that can be integrated into a person's busy schedule to improve productivity, accessibility and scalability.

I used Slido in my teaching a lot this semester. Slido is a synchronous tool that enables live polls, Q&A sessions, and quizzes, fostering real-time student engagement. I found that it encourages participation from all students, including those who are less likely to speak up in class. However, some students may need guidance on using it, which was a bit of a drawback as i had to talk them through using it and this set my session back a few precious minutes.

I also trialled Powtoons recently which was great, i loved it, but, I'm particularly interested in using Canvas quiz function and the discussion board. These are tools i hope to incorporate in my teaching next semester with my masters students to ensure interaction with the module and with each other.

I would like to use Peerwise in my teaching going forward as I think it really helps students with their understanding of concepts in an asynchronous manner. To be able to provide teaching or assessment material for a topic requires in-depth understanding, and so it could be used as a checkpoint for students to assess how competent and comfortable they are with a topic. The feedback tool is also invaluable as students get immediate responses that will keep them focused

Wikis present a compelling opportunity to rethink traditional approaches to teaching and learning. These collaborative tools can transform the classroom into a dynamic, participatory space where students are not just passive recipients of knowledge but active contributors to its construction.

Wikis primarily support asynchronous communication, which has become increasingly relevant in today’s flexible and hybrid learning environments. Unlike with synchronous communication, wikis offer students the freedom to contribute at their own pace. This flexibility can be particularly valuable in diverse classrooms, where students may juggle part-time work, family responsibilities, or other circumstances and commitments that prevent them from participating in live sessions. By integrating wikis into my practice, I can create opportunities for students to engage with course material and collaborate meaningfully, regardless of their external commitments.

I imagine using a wiki to support group projects or scaffold complex topics over time, particularly in a course like mine which is organisational behaviour. In this module, collaboration and reflection are central to understanding concepts like leadership, team dynamics, and ethical decision-making. The wiki could be a platform for exploring contemporary challenges in organisational behaviour, such as managing diversity, remote work, or sustainability. Students might work asynchronously to document emerging trends, evaluate strategies organisations have employed, and propose actionable solutions. By encouraging students to build on one another’s contributions, the wiki becomes a living document that reflects their collective learning journey.

I have used mentineter (And Kahoot) within class to run formative style assessments in the form of quizzes. I have noted that one of the biggest benefits is that it inspires competition. The students in my current cohort thoroughly enjoy competing with one another. When this competition is controlled and used to inspire students to revise, it is an amazing tool. In particular, students get very engaged when the percentage of the class is in the balance on a question. The other side of menimeter is that it is fantastic for gaining feedback. A lot of the function are similar to microsoft form's newest update but in my experience, student's have enjoyed using a different tool.

I'm new to teaching so haven't had chance to utilise many of the tools we have learned about in TEL in my teaching as yet, but this is definitely something I plan to use in my teaching moving forwards. Menti sounds like a great tool for encouraging synchronous communication between staff and students, and I also really like the fact that students can contribute anonymously - giving everyone the chance to speak up and get engaged, especially those who may otherwise be nervous speaking out.

I use mentimeter for open text responses throughout my teaching. I have a getting to know you session, where I ask student's questions about themselves - particulalry work - as the reponses come up I talk about them in a positive way, and some time ask the class a question which promots the writer to respond. I find this really helps to get the module off to a good start by showing students how their work expereinces - whereever they are - and in whatever role prpvide a brilliant resource for them t draw on when thinking about power and organisation. The only time mentimeter let me down was in my final week, end of module quiz. I could not get it to work - and we had to resort to old sckool paper and pen. As I think students may not want too many different platforms (gut-felling - and possibly very biased based on my own perspectives), and a result of this patch, I'm going to investigate different Canvas functions more fully next semester and next year.

(Posted by Pier-Luc Dupont) Like other contributors to this Padlet, I'm a big fan of polling apps such as Slido as a way to obtain rapid, anonymous and rich feedback from students during lectures. In order to enable meaningful student input, I tend to use open-ended questions and give students five minutes to discuss them in small groups before entering their answer. I then highlight and comment on the strongest answers, and sometimes provide corrective feedback on widespread misconceptions. Maintaining a broadly positive and supportive tone is very important for students to keep engaging with polls throughout the module, as they have done so far.

But Mentimeter looks like it has the capability to allow the students to use the devices in front of them but to actively engage in a session instead of to sit and passively absorb information.
