If someone is searching for a financial expert there are some qualifications they should look for. First, you need to look for someone who “puts your needs and interests first” (10). This would be when a financial adviser has a fiduciary standard. When an adviser does not have that standard they would have a suitability standard. “There is more potential conflict of interest under a suitability standard, because advisers are allowed to recommend ‘suitable’ investments that place the adviser’s interest ahead of the client’s” (11). So when looking for a financial adviser make sure they have a fiduciary standard. Next, look for financial advisers with credentials. “For example, Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) practitioners are required to pass rigorous exams and fulfill work experience requirements before obtaining the designation” (10). Also, you can check for a Clean Brokercheck record. This is where you can “view employment history, as well as any disciplinary action and customer disputes that have been reported” (10). The only thing with this is that the planner has to “hold a securities license, or has within the previous 10 years” (10). In addition, you can look for someone who are in professional organizations. This is because “these professional associations provides valuable opportunities for continuing education and professional development” (10). Equally important, is to look for expertise not size of firm. It’s important to remember “expertise is really what you should be paying for” (11). Finally, look for “a compatible adviser that is easy to work with. If a relationship does not feel right, it is not going to work” (11). In the end, if you look for a financial expert with all of these qualifications you will have the best outcome.

There are several different things financial experts can help you with to improve your financial situation. First, they can help you “set realistic financial and personal goals” (9). Next, they can “assess your current financial health by examining your assets, liabilities, income, insurance, taxes, investments and estate plan” (9). They also can, “develop a realistic, comprehensive plan to meet your financial goals by identifying financial opportunities and building on financial strengths” (9). In addition, they “put your plan into action and monitor its progress” (9). Finally, they can help you “stay on track to meet changing goals, personal circumstances, markets and tax laws” (9). In conclusion, financial experts can be very helpful in improving your financial situation.
