A Bullet Journal is a combination between a to-do list, a planner, and a diary. A to-do list tracks things that you need to do, a planner plans the events that will happen in the future, and a diary is about what you have done on that day. It keeps things simple and combines everything into one notebook for convenience.

Link: https://www.buzzfeed.com/rachelwmiller/how-to-start-a-bullet-journal

How to start a Bullet Journal (the simplest way)

INDEX AND FUTURE LOG
To get started, flip to the first blank spread and label both pages as "Index".

To set up the Future Log, flip to the next blank spread and label both pages "Future Log".

A simple way to set up a six-month version is to divide the page to three equal sections horizontally and draw lines across the whole spread. Add the months to each section.

When finished, add the page numbers and write in down in the index.

MONTHLY LOG

Then, turn to the next blank spread to set up the Monthly Log. Add the name of the month on both pages.

The left will be the monthly calendar. Write down all the dates of the month and add the first letter of the days. The right page will be the monthly tasks list. Write down all the things you need to get done in that month. Before each task, draw a task bullet as a simple dot.

Again, when finished, add the page numbers and write in down in the index.

DAILY LOG

To set up the Daily Log, enter the day, the date, and start writing entries. Entries should be short sentences. Each entry goes into one of three categories:

- Tasks: Indicated by a dot (·)

- Events: Indicated by a circle (o)

- Notes: Indicated by the dash (-)

If a task is really important, place a star (*) to the left of it. This is known as a Signifier.

This action is called Rapid Logging. It captures and organizes information really fast.

At the end of each month, set up the next Monthly Log. Scan the Daily Log and cross out the completed tasks with an X. Take a moment and assess the remaining open tasks by asking: “Is this still worth my time?” If it isn’t, strike it out. If it is, turn the entry’s task dot into a right arrow (>) and copy the entries into the new monthly log. If that task is due months from now, turn the task dot into a left arrow (<) and copy it into that month in the future log. This action is called Migration. Migration helps to remove distractions.

COLLECTIONS

To organize related items, turn to the next blank page to create a Collection. Give it a topic and number the pages. When finished, add the page numbers and write in down in the index. Then migrate all the notes and tasks into that collection. Then add the page numbers into the index.

Link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=fm15cmYU0IM

Cons:
- Bullet journals are very time-consuming since you have to start from scratch and set up everything. It would consume even more time if you want to decorate your journal.
- Unlike planners and to-do lists, bullet journals include lots of new concepts like logs, migration, collections, etc.
- They may get expensive if you want to decorate your journals like artists by using watercolors, brush tip pens, markers, etc.
- To start and maintain the habit of bullet journaling requires effort. The categories and logs and decorations seem unnecessary. And if you lose your journal, then you have no choice but to start again from scratch.

Link: https://www.anhthology.com/blog/bullet-journal-pros-and-cons
