After WWI, many American writers, musicians & painters left the U.S. and moved from one European city to the next trying to find meaning in life again now that the war was over. Traveling the world only made it worse because of all the damage the war had caused, there was a lot of destruction and many lives were taken away.

The types of arts movements during WWI were Romanticism, Realism, Surrealism, and Cubism. Romanticism was an early 19th century movement in art and thought, that focused on emotion and nature rather than reason and society. It was the opposite of Realism, which Realism was where, in art, you showed people's lives as they were, with no filter as people nowadays would say, like how in Opera it uses the human voice and speech to show real emotions. Then there was an art movement called Surrealism which was to connect the world of dreams with real life, this type of art was inspired by Sigmund Freud. Another type of art movement and the most influential one of all was cubism, which was when objects were broken down and reassembled in an abstract way, to depict the subject from many viewpoints instead of just one. Pablo Picasso used both Surrealism and Cubism, so did Salvador Dali and Georges Braque just used Cubism.
