Though all of the texts are addressing their own unique issues, I have noticed that the problems that the sources are addressing can be grouped into three broad categories. The first category would be how writing and culture are connected, Pattanayak’s and Alvarez’s texts both addressed this topic. The second problem that the texts addressed were issues surrounding how writing is taught. This issue was addressed by Wardle’s, Strong’s, Flaherty’s, Carillo’s, and Yancey’s texts. The third problem that the texts addressed was misconceptions surrounding the writing process. Giovanelli, Bunn, and Edwards and Paz all addressed this need.

The contributions that the writers are trying to make are to address concerns and misunderstandings surrounding learning to write and learning how to write, as well as how this ties into culture and diversity. These writers are offering solutions to these problems and clearing up misconceptions.

After reading all the articles where each author communicated different issues and arguments, I have come to notice that all of their arguments and problems can be categorized under one general umbrella of English literary academics (writing and speaking) and its relation/effect on students and culture. For example, one aspect of this umbrella is the technicality and strategies of writing and how they are taught. These specific ideas were addressed by Carillo, Yancey, Wardle, Strong, and Flaherty. Another aspect is how writing affects students and culture, where these relations pertain to minorities and diversity. These ideas are primarily reached by Pattanayak and Alvarez. The contributions of thoughts and ideas that these authors make are to emphasize the current issues in English academic literacies in relation to culture and students. These authors offer advice and solutions to these problems in revising/fixing the education system.

All the literacy texts are setting the stage for their own structured purpose, yet share similar intentions. There are many problems these sources expressed. Several of the texts presented a misconception and obliterated it. Many focused on writing procedures such as revision, strategies such as reading like a writer, collaborating in order to better write, and not having a general way to approach text. The texts were also centered around how reading and writing skills are strengthened due to being intertwined with one’s native tongue, along with culture and not just English, emphasizing that diversity only assists us. A number of the texts also called for attention to the way literacy skills are being taught by educators in institutions and how they are innovating and can be strengthened. These authors are contributing to rising concerns giving their input to provide resolutions, clear up writing misconceptions and give their scholarly input on ways to improve literacy skills and the ways they are taught.

After all the reading we have done in this class we can see that all the articles fall under similar topics in regards to writing and literature. If we further examine the article they can be further separated into different categories. One of the major categories we have focused on much in this class is writing processes. As we will be writing a synthesis essay it is important to know about the general idea of how we should create ideas, develop an outline, begin writing drafts and one of the most important topics we have gone over, revision. Another major category in which many of the readings could go over is finding and using sources correctly. I was also able to find in the readings was the emphasized idea that there is no correct way to write. Whether it is the constant change of style because of a different topic or even language barrier there will always be a unique diversity in writing.

The sources are addressing the need for proficiency in reading and writing. The problems that they are presenting are related to the lack of comprehensive college level reading and writing instruction. Some sources attribute this to the writing assignments themselves, stating that they are not creative enough and merely involve summarizing. Other sources attribute it to focusing primarily on writing "rules" instead of the content itself. The writers are trying to contribute by highlighting alternative methods for teaching reading and writing methods including integrating collaboration into the curriculum. Additionally, the sources debunk harmful myths and misconceptions about what good writing and good writers should be like.

After reading all of the sources we've read about so far in UWP 7Y, the commonality that the sources are addressing is the need for improvement in how English writing and reading is taught and perceived in universities and other educational institutions. Bunn, Giovanelli, Wardle, and Edward & Paz argue about specific strategies which will make individuals better writers like Reading like a Writer and using effective revision. Moreover, Strong, Flaherty, Carillo, and Yancey express the uniqueness of college/university writing from high school and prior education. These authors explain how educators should be teaching writing in a way that would be more beneficial for students. Lastly, Pattanayak and Alvarez advocate for students who are at a disadvantage due to the lack of diversity in the way writing is taught in institutions. The writers are trying to contribute to the conversation of how students can become better writers by offering solutions and addressing issues with how writing is taught and perceived.

The problems that some of them present are about why writing is changing for the worse and why it is negative towards society, and also about how writers need to develop and adjust to the current state of writing.

In my classes and homework in UWP 7Y, I have read and tried to write a lot of articles. Among the articles I have read, Bunn, Carillo and Strong's article tells us about writing in college and gives us a lot of arguments on how to progress and why thinking is so important in college. Of course, Alvarez, Yancey and Pattanayak's essay argues that writing is not only a personal but also a historical process, and they also provide an unpacking and analysis of the history of writing so that we can understand what the current tasks and goals of writing are. The authors also propose a number of new pedagogical approaches aimed at adapting to the new era and at better learning and application by students. Afterwards, Giovanelli, Wardle, and Edward & Paz go on to talk about the importance of revision and decision-making. It is important to read and use effective revision like a writer. Meanwhile, we also have to be persistent in our writing and not presume to give up on it. Writing is for all, not for individuals.

All of the articles and book chapters discuss the writing process. Some are a a general summary and explanation, while others only focus on one part of the writing process. Most of the authors addressed the importance of revision and using outside resources for influence. More specifically, it was emphasized that writing is not a solo process, it is instead a collaboration of many writers. Most of the writers aimed to try to reinforce ideas from other authors. These writers accomplished this by compiling data and information from other sources and emphasizing key points in their article. Also, most of these writers targeted their published works to students or professors.

From my knowledge of the sources, Bunn,Gionavelli,Strong, Wardle seems to be telling the reader on how to fix one's technique when doing writing using many ways like making questions as you write so their readers know what's going on (Bunn), Revise often when writing (Gionavelli), think while you are writing (Strong), applying previous knowledge and learn things while doing situational writing (Wardle). The rest seems to be addressing topics relating to a specific part of writing that is either should be changed like Alvarez's and Pattanayak's on how Standard English shouldn't be the main focus and instead focus on the diversity of people and to embrace the diversity in languages, Carillo on why reading and writing should be taught together, Edward and Paz with how writing is hard, but a good way for collaborating, or using information about writing in general (with Flaherty using Melzer study and their analysis on it and Yancey talking about the history of writing in these recent decades). From these sources, since their audience is for students, they seem to want to inform the reader of some setbacks of writing as well as a way for them to improve on their writing for the better.

While all the articles we have read thus far are focusing on writing and reading at the University level, there is a more specific breakdown of the problems they address and how that affects their contributions. For example, all of the readings from Bad Ideas About Writing are about common misconceptions about reading and/or writing, but even they can be categorized further. There have been readings about the problems associated with the teaching of writing (Flaherty, Yancey, and Carillo). The contributions of these texts were more directed towards educators and teachers of writing, rather than some of the other texts which are directed to college writers. Another problem that was discussed was the connection (or disconnect) between writing and culture (Alvarez and Pattanayak). Their articles contributed to society and the scholarly community because they discussed the visible inequity in the academic writing setting. The last grouping would be articles that discussed specific reading and/or writing techniques for the collegiate level (Bunn, Strong, Edward and Paz, Giovanelli, and Wardle). They addressed misconceptions and contributed their research on how to grow past these misconceptions into a better writer.

All the writers are trying to give the readers a broader idea and view of writing and reading by arguing against common previously held misconceptions that even the readers may have believed before and instead show how complex and intricate reading and writing is, both individually and together. All these articles tend to fall under the same category and talk about writing. Although they all do fall under the same category, they all talk differently about writing and their experiences. A big problem that sources tend to address is the writing process. The category being that there is a need to reform the way literature is taught as it has a major impact on cultures and students. The writers all made a point that English and writing are two intertwined subjects, both of which have a strong impact on students and their cultures. This particular issue was addressed by Pattanayak and Alvarez. Meanwhile articles by Carillo, Yancey, and Strong addressed the problems with the way schools have systematically taught writing which led to students having a negative connotation with writing. All these authors have one more thing in common. They are all trying to propose solutions to the problems they believe writing has.
