Gettysburg crippled the south so badly that General Lee would never again possess sufficient forces to invade a Northern state. Confederates led by A. P. Hill, went to find footwear in Gettysburg when they ran into brigades of union cavalry under the command of John Buford. On July 2, the second day of the battle, both sides were ready with soldiers. When the confederates ran out of ammo, more than a third of the brigade had fallen. At the end of the day though, both sides were still holding up. The third day, July 3rd, Lee ordered an artillery barrage on the middle of the union. The confederates tried to keep moving forward but the North held up well.  The battle went on for 3 days, with losses, and with more than 30 percent casualties.
