The whole purpose for the fleet was to find a convict settlement on the east coast of Australia, botany bay.

For at least 50,000 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have lived on this land and practiced traditional cultures and languages. From the late 1700s, British colonies were established. By the late 1800s, these colonies had their own parliaments but were still subject to the law-making power of the British parliament.

On the day many Australians celebrated the arrival of the first fleet and colonization of australia. But for many Aboriginal and Torrie strait islanders this was no celebration as it marked the day their land was taken from them by the British.

However, it wasn’t until 1896 that Tasmania granted Aboriginal men franchise. In 1895 South Australia became the first electorate in the world to give equal political rights to both women and men. Aboriginal women shared these rights.

The journey to National Apology began with the Bringing Them Home report – the findings of an inquiry instigated by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission in 1995.
