What they revealed:   He said counter-espionage as used to monitor politicians and manipulated the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA). The MI5 would be a bunch of incompetent and alcoholic bureaucrats who have been squandering public money for years on such subversive individuals as Peter Mandelson (the recently resigned Minister of Industry), Jack Straw Interior) or the UB 40 group. Due to internal bumps, the MI5 would have been unable to prevent two attacks in London in the 1990s.

How they revealed it: After five years of loyal service, David Shayler left MI5, said all the evil he thought in the press and opened a website to demand the reform of the British secret services.
Impact:  The services concerned refuse to comment. But one understands that these kinds of statements do not amuse them and that they try to put their author under the locks.

Personal consequences: (what happened to them, sentence...) The one that the British newspapers call the "renegade" is stuck in France with his friend Annie Machon, also ex-agent of MI5. And he risks spending his life in exile for disclosing state secrets.
