Modernism basically seems like they moved forward with new ideas and discoveries and tradition didnt seem important anymore. Modernism was happening in the 19th and early 20th century and originated in mostly Europe and North America. Like Ezra Pounds maxim "Make it New" Modernism was like a break from traditional styles of writing and experimenting with new things. The reason being why I chose this time period is because it is open to different perspectives. It also challenges many different social issues, either past or current. It erases the idea that there are different classes of people, and that they should act as such. It creates more potential for complex characters and in-depth points of view. Many famous literary works fall under this time period, for example, No Country For Old Men.
The antagonist, Anton Chigurh, sets a great example for character development in terms of complexity, moral questioning, and emotion, or in this case, lack thereof.

The reason I like this one the most is because, it has a darker side to the story usually and the story is always deeper than it seems. For example in the story "The Tell Tale Heart" the story is showing how your heart can tell on you for what you did no matter how hard you try to hide it your emotions can over power your brain from reality. In that story as he tries to lie his emotions over power his brain and creates hallucinations that causes him to confess his wrongs. The style of   Transcendentalism and Gothic Literature is very interesting to me because of the way it puts a spin on common literature, by that I mean how the majority of story's would have been written in the style of Romanticism. The style of  Transcendentalism and Gothic Literature sends you into an alternate reality almost with how it makes you feel, because everyone can relate to telling a lie and feeling wrong for telling that lie and remember how it made you feel. The story just makes the emotions more obvious and dramatists it to effect the mood and tone of the story to connect more with the audience. Realism is the time period between the civil war and post war. The narrators didn't try to tell their audience how to interpret their stories. These stories were typically nonfiction and shorter in this era. These short stories and novels were more gruesome, the narrators didn't hold much back from the readers. The people writing these were hoping that the readers would see the truth in their writing and try to change the world they were living in. I think this is the most interesting because it involves different and creative things that you cannot find anywhere else. The romanticism period explores the mind in a way no other literary time period can represent or replicate. The romanticism period is extraordinary because its the most unrealistic and crazy out of them all. That period shows things like imaginary stories, horror, love, and so many different aspects of the human mind. This period is easily the most diverse overall. Id rather read a book written in this period than any other period.

It was the time period that jazz, blues and gospel music was born. The African Americans decided to move north away from the south and they started having more media outlets and freedom.Book genres like novels, short stories , drama and poetry were starting to appear more and be known. There were African American authors like web DuBois that got to publish there essays and poems from moving to the north. I love the way the authors during this time period portray emotions and inspire fear into their readers. When writing such dark pieces, especially during their time period, it was seen as weird and out of the ordinary which made it that much more unique. It can be somewhat difficult to provide a sense of fear in something like a poem or a book, however, authors like Thoreau found a way to do just that. They would use imagery and vivid wording to make it spooky. They would give their writings very dark undertones which also helped in the development of the more dark and twisted side of things. Many people may had frowned upon this kind of writing due to the fact that it was not common to see books written in such manner so it was difficult to get used to. "the raven" by Edgar Allen Poe let you imaging the situations and scenarios in your head. October is my favorite month which has Halloween in it. A holiday that is meant to have some aspect of "creepiness" to it that you can read a Gothic literary piece and get the true feeling for the holiday. This type of literary piece lets you get chills when imagining the right things which makes the Gothic era really interesting. This was one of the less popular writings styles because it didn't fit the styles back then. These contain some of the newer "classic" pieces and authors that I know of today. It's also the one besides post-modern that I've read the most of. I love Robert frost's poems. Stream of consciousness writing is like a puzzle that you put together as you read and one of my favorite styles of writing. The more grim and thought provoking writing caused by what was happening in the world are like time capsules that you can open to step into someone else's life. I also like this time period because I find the fact that it overlaps with the romanticism period very comforting because during that period they made their work fantasies to escape reality. In this time period, the authors had a certain way of showing their thoughts and feelings in their literature. During this period, most people would look at it as unsettling or different, but they never cared. I like how realism does not tell the reader how to interpret the story, but instead lets the reader get their own spin on it. Realism were stories that were real, they were not made up happy ending stories they were just simple stories. These stories could end in a bad way or in a good way, they were not forced to end in a good way and i like that. This gives the short stories or novels a variety of places to take the story. These stories make the characters more important then their actions and the plot of the story.
