He says they are like "arms" to the rich, and strives to take back the land for the people.
Lupe - the mother of the family, she is the homemaker, taking care of basic domestic needs in the house.

1) After trying to organize in the labor community, the army murders Arturo, and takes Lupe away. Enrique murders one of the soldiers, so he and Rosa decide to leave Guatemala, with help from their godmother.
2) The two siblings make it through Mexico, and upon arrival to Tijuana meet Jaime, who offers to guide them across the border, but ultimately robs them. They are found by immigration, but pass themselves off as Mexican, and are deported back to Tijuana. Enrique finds Raimundo, the coyote he originally sought, and he agrees to get them across for $100 dollars. Rosa sells her mother's silver for the money, and Raimundo leads the siblings through a tunnel across the border.
3) Rosa and Enrique both find working class jobs and a small apartment. They start taking English classes, and Enrique's employers promote him. Out of envy, his coworker Carlos reports him to immigration and Enrique loses his job. Rosa gets very sick from the rats they encountered in the sewer tunnel. Enrique opts to take a job in Chicago, but loses the opportunity when he must see Rosa in the hospital. She dies lamenting that they cannot make a life in Guatemala, Mexico, or even in El Norte. Enrique finds new physical labor for work, but is haunted by his experience.

1) Rich vs. Poor
The disparity of wealth is heavily depicted throughout film. The decadence of white American life is contrasted with the poverty in other countries, and for the immigrants who one to the US.
2) Trust
The siblings have to make hard decisions about who to trust in their journey given their precarious situation. People like Jaime and Carlos take advantage of their precarious situation for their own gain.
3) Cultural Misunderstanding
Once Rosa and Enrique reach the North they are forced to deal with various cultural differences. While a difference like a fast flushing toilet is welcome, Rosa reacts adversely to the overly complicated washing machines, opting to wash her employer's clothes by hand instead. Part of this cultural misunderstanding is derived from difference between American and Guatemalan life, but cultural differences between strict hispanic and indigenous people is significant too. Rosa and Enrique pass themselves off as Oaxacan throughout, showing how people cannot differentiate between indigenous people.
4) Disillusionment of the American Dream
Life in the North is something the family initially idealizes, focusing on the glamor of American life, but the inability to access social mobility once Rosa and Enrique get to the US displays the destruction of those ideals. The glamorous stripped away to reveal America's own class divisions and racial prejudices.
