The Women in The Great Gatsby are not portrayed as very intelligent. They are depicted as not being able to make any decisions on their own.
1. "Dishonesty in a woman is a thing you never blame deeply."(Pg. 64) Fitzgerald is saying that women are not intelligent enough to lie. They are not able to be dishonest.
2. "But of course I'll say I was."(Pg.154) Gatsby believes that women should not take responsibility for their actions. He believes that they can not take the blame.
3. "and the decision must be made by some force."(Pg.161) Fitzgerald believes that women can not make their own decisions. They must have a man to make the decisions.
4. "Almost any exhibition of complete self-sufficiency draws a stunned tribute from me."(Pg.12) Nick can not believe that a woman is independent. He does not understand that she does not need a man.
5. "That's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool."(Pg.20) Daisy believes that ignorance is bliss. She believes that is good for women to not be intelligent.

Women in the Great Gatsby are only really talked about when it has to do with men. They are not characters without men.
1."I drove over there to have dinner with the Tom Buchanan's." (Pg.8) Daisy is not even referenced by herself. She is only attached to Tom.
2. "Almost any exhibition of complete self-sufficiency draws a stunned tribute from me."(Pg. 12) Nick is shocked by the fact that Jordan does not need a man and does not show up with a man.
3. "and the two young women ballooned to the floor."(Pg.11) Tom is taking away the women's fun and metaphorically deflates them.
4. "Her face was sad and lovely with bright things in it." (Pg.12) Fitzgerald is saying that even though she is sad she is still appearing to be happy. This is the idea that women must always smile no matter what.
5. "Tom Buchanan broke her nose with his fist." (Pg.41) Myrtle is only important in the story because she is having an affair with Tom. Tom is mad at her because she brings up Daisy who is his actual wife.
