I have been excited to see the initiatives to protect the micro-ecosystem of Carr Lake in Salinas where three historic rivers come together (but now look more like drainage ditches). It seems we may have ways to integrate artistic and ecological awareness to make this an important center of restoration, amidst the onward success (with complications) of the human “social super-organism”. The homeless population as well as agricultural chemicals are all important factors to consider.

Challenges for my students include language barriers, interrupted school time (in the case of students with migrant status) and high levels of students who struggle with reading and writing in English. Also, there are less opportunities to get students out of the classroom for real scientific exploration.

My support is my PLC and science department first, and sometimes other educators in my district. I have to be creative about where I get my resources otherwise. I don't feel connected to local programs that can broaden my student's experience.

What would be helpful (when possible due to COVID restrictions) would be guests who can visit and broaden students understanding of what a career in science/arts might look like. It would be great if we had long-term projects for students and a place to display/present that work? There are many challenges that I wish I had support. The biggest issue is more time with students. The year seems to go fast and I always run out of time because there is a lot of information to teach. Most of our students come to 7th grade without any elementary or sixth grade science and we are expected to catch student up to 8th grade science. My biggest wish list is for students to be introduce to science concepts starting in elementary. 
I feel like we have access to many materials for learning. I would love funding to take students outdoors/fieldtrips: Teach students about the environment while learning to enjoy the environment as I think many of my students don't get out in nature. Especially during COVID.
