What was Chernobyl?

Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant in Pripyat Ukraine. It generated power in the Soviet Union. It produced energy for northern Ukraine and west Russia. Pripyat was a fast growing town with around 50,000 residence until the disaster.

On April 26, 1986. Reactor 4 was due for a safety test that night during the shutdown to see if the generators could be able to keep the cooling units running. There was a delay during the test and the reactor was running on a low power at an unstable condition. Operators reduced the power too much-near zero. This caused the reactor to become unstable. To raise power they removed too many control rods. Control rods absorb neutrons to regulate the nuclear reaction, removing to many makes the reactor dangerously reactive. The reactor was operating at an extremely low and unstable power. Several safety systems were disabled, including the emergency core cooling system to avoid interfering with the test. Then the test simulated a power outage. Steam supply was cut to the turbine. As turbines slowed, water flow dropped, and the reactor became hotter and more reactive. In a sudden power surge, the reactors output spiked massively. The operators hit the AZ-5 emergency shutdown button, which inserted all control rods at once. This triggered the explosion. Due to a design flaw in the RBMK reactor, inserting all of the rods increased reactivity. Within seconds a massive steam explosion blew off the reactors 1,000 ton concrete lid, followed by a second more powerful explosion from a hydrogen build up or a second steam pressure surge.

The reactor core was completely exposed and began burning. Graphite moderator caught fire, releasing radioactive particles high into the atmosphere. A massive radioactive cloud spread over Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and eventually Europe. 130 firefighters responded unaware of the lethal amount of radiation. 2 people died in the explosion. 28 died within 2 weeks due to Acute Radiation Sickness. Survivors suffered burns, organ damage, and long term illness. Firefighters were not told it was a nuclear accident, they all thought it was a normal fire. Pripyat was evacuated 36 hours later. By then they had already received dangerous amount of radiation. Evacuees left everything behind, expecting to return—they never did. Eventually, about 350,000 people were evacuated or relocated from a 30 km exclusion zone and other affected regions. Many experienced displacement, trauma, and poor living conditions in resettlement areas. Children were very vulnerable. Thousands developed thyroid cancer due to radioactive iodine. There was a sharp increase in Thyroid cancer, Leukemia, and other radiation induced illnesses to all people. 4,000 to 90,000 people had potential long term cancer deaths. People who survived the disaster were called Chernobylite's which caused isolation and created depression. Entire town were abandoned, and people lost jobs all over the place. The towns around the power plant are still abandoned till this day.

The Soviet government spent billions of dollars to clean up the disaster. Money was taken from schools, to pay for it. Since the plant was destroyed, less electricity being made, then less profit from selling power. Since people were moved, it led to massive cost for new housing and food. Land could no longer be used for farming which led to economic loss. Long term healthcare cost came with it from the long term illnesses. Chernobyl causes the government to spend huge amounts of money on clean up, healthcare, and loss of electricity. It was a huge economic disaster.

How did it impact the environment?

The explosion spread radioactive material around Europe. The land around Chernobyl and all of the plants, ground, and objects became contaminated. The environment in Chernobyl, "Exclusion Zone," is still dangerous today. The area since no humans can go there, some wildlife has returned to thriving.

How we addressed the issue and what value system does this reflect?

We evacuated thousands of people from the area. Created a exclusion zone that is still restricted till this day. Scientist still monitor the area till this day and monitor radiation levels. That shows a few key values, evacuating people and saving their lives, took responsibility on cleaning up the disaster. countries worked together to help with all of the things needed help with.

Chernobyl is important in history because it was the worst nuclear accident ever, showing the dangers of nuclear power. It changed the world perspective on how they manage nuclear energy.

Chernobyl showed how much harm humas can cause to the environment. It made people aware to the protection of nature and how important it is, and use technology responsibly. It also showed us that we have a duty to protect this planet.

How we solved the Problem.

We solved the problem in many ways using, eco, anthro, and technocentric ideas. First thing is they built a still dome over the reactor to contain the radiational and used technology to monitor and clean up the area. (Technocentric). The evacuation of all of the people to get them away from the lethal amounts of radiation, and studying people who were exposed.(Anthropocentric). The exclusion zone, allowed nature to recover since there were no human activity in the area.(Ecocentric).

The neighboring city of Chernobyl, Pripyat is now a ghost city and has been for year. Its a weird eerie feeling because that was such a fast growing city and now everything is just left there. Some animals, like wolves, boars, and even rare species like lynxes, are now thriving in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, even with the radiation. Without humans around, nature has started to reclaim the area. But there are higher chance of birth defects.
