Learning Assignments and Growth Reflection (Draft)

This semester, I found learning about the origins of the universe, the rock cycle, and the energy flow of the four spheres most challenging. Initially, these topics seemed very complex, and I often found myself confused about the steps or unable to grasp the connections between them.

To overcome this, I utilized diagrams, charts, and videos to make the lessons clearer. I also practiced explaining concepts in my own words and asked questions whenever I was confused. These strategies helped me understand the topics step by step.

When I finally mastered these strategies, I felt a sense of pride and confidence in my learning. I would advise other students to be patient, utilize visual aids, and ask for help when needed. Overcoming these challenges has taught me that with persistence, even the most difficult concepts can be learned.

Letter to a Younger Student

To my junior,

I have learned so many things about Earth Science for a very long time, and I’ve always found it very interesting as it teaches us learners about what we live in in the Earth and beyond our living. It doesn’t just teach us about the differences of nature and beyond but the beauty and perfection of God’s creation to beings and above. A lot has happened throughout the years, and this year, I’ve gained more insights about the Earth.

The most meaningful lesson for me was the Theory of the Universe, which we tackled more to the accepted theory that most people agreed on, the Big Bang Theory. Its evidence shows the correlation on how the universe was truly created on the Book of Genesis in the Bible. Other lessons such as Earth’s Characteristics and Minerals and Rocks also gave me valuable insights on how Earth and its resources are helpful to nature. The four spheres of the Earth connects to our life because it they all interact together to support and create live to Earth. Every aspect of the Earth needs specific needs such as plants, water, air, and soil. Each sphere has a specific role and they all work together to maintain and support the life in Earth. There are also these rocks and minerals and these remind us of God’s creation, His design that shows His creativity towards creating our planet. These serve a great cause to nature and its living beings because these provide resources for what we need, which reflect to God’s purpose to sustain life in Earth. These lessons can teach us how we are blessed and assured by God’s grace, giving us life and resources that we need.

God gave us these resources, but we also have a role to take when we live. We need to protect and sustain life with God’s grace to providing us resources. As a student, we can protect water and soil resources by avoiding littering and properly throwing trash in bins. We can also join school clean-up or tree-planting activities to help conserve water and make the environment more cleaner. Nature is a very important aspect in our lives and we should not create an environment where everything is trashed because of human actions. As students, we can start now by doing these things together. This is all through God’s creation, and we shall create ways to help together sustain a better life. Science and faith can work together because it shows how God’s design seen in nature and how humans care for it. Science shows us everything that nature and its resources function, whereas faith reminds us of God’s purpose and our responsibility as His creation to protect and sustain His creation. We must always remember that science helps us understand the world and faith reminds us how God’s design and purpose for the things He has created for us. As students ourselves, let’s do our parts to take care of Earth with the help of science and the guidance of faith so we can be an example to those who are lost, including you, my junior. Let us praise the Lord with our God-given hands and continue to help the world.

I became aware of how interconnected the world is this quarter in Earth Science. Understanding the beginnings of the solar system, the universe, and the Earth's subsystems helped me to understand that our planet is not randomly put together but rather it was carefully designed.

Understanding the connections between the four Earth spheres like the hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and geosphere, was the lesson that most impressed me out of all of them. The others are impacted if one is damaged. For instance, the destruction of forests (biosphere) results in soil erosion (geosphere), river pollution (hydrosphere), and even a decline in the quality of the air (atmosphere).

I was reminded of God's wisdom when I saw soil, water, rocks, and minerals as precious resources. We are entrusted to use them responsibly, and their purpose is clear: to support life. These things are easy to take for granted, but when we misuse them, we are reminded of the consequences by calamities like landslides, floods, and water shortages.

I can start small as a student by participating in tree-planting projects, conserving water, and cutting down on plastic waste. However, I also see how Earth Science can be used in any future career, whether it be to help others learn about environmental protection or to encourage sustainable work practices.

This quarter taught me that science and faith do not contradict each other. Faith tells us why we should take care of the Earth, while science explains how it functions. I now consider environmental responsibility to be a part of honoring God as the Creator, not just a duty. My vision board serves as a reminder that I can be a good steward of creation and preserve the planet for present and future generations if I have the right knowledge and faith.

From the timelines I created, I learned about theories about the creation of the universe and theories about the formation of the solar system. I learned about the most popularized theory, the Big Bang Theory in which the universe used to rapidly contract into a hot mass which then became so unstable that it began rapidly expanding. I also learned about Cosmic Microwave Radiation and Redshift which are basically proof that the Big Bang happened and that the universe is still expanding to this day, cooling down as it goes which allows the formation of stars and then galaxies. I learned about the Solar Nebular Hypothesis which is where a huge cloud of gas and dust got condensed and collapsed into a disk due to gravity and it began rapidly spinning until the center of it became a hot star. This is how all stars in the universe are theorized to be made and groups of these disks and stars eventually form galaxies. Our Solar System was theorized to be made due to the formation of the Sun from the disk and then the formation of our other 9 planets including Earth from the leftover gas and dust from the disk. I learned that Genesis and The Big Bang are often interconnected, but there are other stuff that are debated upon in science and the Bible like how the Earth was formed, were the Sun and Moon really created on the same “day”, what even is a “day” to God, and etc. Finally, I learned about the different other theories that are not as accepted or debunked because they fail to explain certain things like the Steady State Theory which states that the universe had no beginning and no end and it has always just been here, which has been debunked due to the discovery of Cosmic Microwave Radiation, proving that something really did cause the universe to rapidly expand.
