Students at my new placement struggle with literacy. There are few students that can write without making spelling mistakes, using proper punctuation, capitalizing, etc. The difference seems to be based on socio-economic status and general demographic differences between my two placement schools.

Grade 6 vs grade 1

Last year I was in a grade 6 placement and this year I was in a grade 1 placement for my 3rd practicum. The biggest difference I have seen is the independence. With the older students, they are very independent. The younger ones need more help (opening things, pencil-sharpening etc.) Another difference I have noticed is when giving instructions. For my younger kiddos I have noticed that I am explaining and explaining instructions. Even if I have the instructions up on the board some of my learners aren't strong readers and need verbal instruction as well.

How to tailor a lesson to students with different abilities or a split grade class

no classroom management this year at all, only redirecting behaviours during instruction, last year this was all dealt with at beginning of year before my placement had started

I think one of the biggest differences is the amount of feedback I was receiving in both. In my first practicum I got a lot of feedback whereas this practicum I haven't received as much. The other big difference is with behaviours. I have a much busier class this year!

My teacher this placement is more focused on math whereas my other placements had a heavy focus on language.
