How I imagine myself in 20 years' time...

In 2043 I will be 45 and will probably live in a city far from home , but I will fly back to my hometown often because I always miss the dishes here. I will still enjoy casual and confortable clothings, immersed in my love for art story, painting and video games. I have always and will continue to use cooking as a way to maintain my connection with life and the people around me. There are plenty of small restaurants in my hometown that use unique cooking methods, and each recipe represents the inheritage that the chefs have received from their parents. However, with the popularity of efficient, low-cost, and easy-to-operate assembly line restaurants such as fast food and pre-made dishes in the market, traditional family operated restaurants are gradually decreasing due to their high costs and high requirements for chef cooking skills. In 20 years, chain stores selling pre-made food from factories will increasingly replace restaurants with unique flavors. The recipes used to connect family members, friends, and communities in the past will be difficult for young people who are busy with work to inherit.

Cooking as a living heriage

As a person grew up in town, I have not participated in the progress of planting foods. However, in my opinion, planting crops and raising livestock are significant steps in human adaptation to nature. Obtaining food is the most primitive and direct way for humans to communicate with nature during their hard work of trying to survival. I have no land to cultivate, and my family doesn't work in agriculture either, but as an advancement after human discovered the way to make fire, cooking is closely related to the acquisition of food. People first developed the experience of maximizing the use of food to avoid waste in cooking due to the need for survival, and then developed systematic cooking methods in the long process of interacting with food due to the need for taste. Residents in different areas have completely different way of handling their foods, determined by the environment, produce and climate, and the unique cooking methods of a region can become a way for the community to strengthen connections and enhance identity. As far as family and friendship are concerned, it is a traditional way and one of the best ways to keep close relationship when people have dinner together in their spare time or festivals. I won't become a professional cook in the future, but I will be quite interested in learning receipies of different regions and enjoy cooking for my loved ones as a way of understanding the cultures in different places and a way of communicating with my family and friends.

Some members in my family, such as my uncle and my grandmother, are good at cooking. Others like my parents have neither interest nor skill in making meals. For my uncle and my grandmother, cooking is obviously a part of their daily life, and they are usually the 'Chef' when the family gather during festivals. My parents are those who get used to ordering fastfood .

Safeguarding

The safeguarding of cooking skills is not only about the industry itsellf. The main reason that the importance of cooking is fading is that people are so occupied with their jobs and they have basically no time to prepare food by themselves, or even have no time to wait for a hand-made meal in a restaurant. In the mean while, their income did not increase with the increase of working hours, and that's why industrialized pre-made food with lower prime cost (hence, lower price) gets increasingly popular.
I don't really know how to solve this problem because that seems far beyond my reach as a cultural heritage protection worker.
