Dear Students,
As we prepare to celebrate Environmental Day on June 5th, we will be focusing on some of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that help protect our environment. These goals are important because they guide us in making our world a better, cleaner, and healthier place to live.

We expect you to research 7 goals which are directly related to environmental issues and write a paragraph, taking into account the points listed.
Please organize and share your findings. * The name and definition of the goal *The importance of the goal * Actions taken to achieve the goal * Relevant data and examples * Your thoughts on how you can contribute to this goal.

Let's work together to create a sustainable future!

Adrian Gazze

Goal 11 is about making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Cities represent the future of global living. The world’s population reached 8 billion on 2022 over half living in urban areas. This figure is only expected to rise, with 70 per cent of people expected to live in cities by 2050. Approximately 1.1 billion people currently live in slums or slum-like conditions in cities, with 2 billion more expected in the next 30 years.

However many of these cities are not ready for this rapid urbanisation, and it outpaces the development of housing, infrastructure and services, which led to a rise in slums or slum-like conditions.

Urban sprawl, air pollution and limited open public spaces persist in cities.

Good progress has been made since the implementation of the SDGs in 2015, and now the number of countries with national and local disaster risk reduction strategies has doubled. But issues still remain and in 2022, only half of the urban population had convenient access to public transport.

Water is one of the biggest needs for the human kind, yet a lot of people lack clean water resources. Right now around 2 billion people lack the usage of sanitary water and about 3.4 billion people live in water stressed countries. This is especially a big problem for us because about 60% of the human body is made up of water. So, why is water so important? What important role does it play in our life? Water, helps improve the circulation of oxygen through the body. It also sanitizes the human body and helps clean our houses, our clothes..... But, what actions can we take to our 2030 targets? We have to work 6 times harder than we are right now to meet our goals and to make sure everyone has access to clean water.

Life below water is Goal 14 of the Sustainable Development Goals, set to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, sea and marine resources for sustainable development. Currently the state of our oceans are declining due to climate change factors and human behaviour.
The deterioration of coastal waters is increasing due to both pollution and coastal eutrophication. Similar factors contribute to climate change, negatively affecting the oceans and marine biodiversity which is slowly declining. The threat of growing algal blooms and dead zones in the oceans are alarming; in 2018 it was stated that "without concerted efforts, coastal eutrophication is expected to increase in 20% of large marine ecosystems by 2050".
A recent report states ocean acidification reporting stations have tripled worldwide since 2021, in addition to 1 in 5 fish caught from illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. Beach clean-ups across the coasts are shedding light on the increase in ocean plastic pollution which suffocates the seas.
Marine conservation, local livelihoods and resource sustainability measures are compromised by poor decision-making in resource management. Consistent efforts are being made to improve such management. "The sustainable management of our oceans relies on the ability to influence and guide human use of the marine environment". To counter regression in achieving Goal 14, "swift and coordinated global action is imperative".

To this end, efforts include improving water treatment, promoting water conservation practices, and ensuring equitable access to water resources. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), some 785 million people still do not have access to basic drinking water supplies, demonstrating the urgency of this goal. To help, individuals can conserve water at home, advocate for water efficiency programs, and support organizations working to improve access to safe water around the world

Without clean water, people can get really sick from drinking dirty water, and without proper toilets, the environment can get polluted. To achieve this goal, many countries are building new water treatment plants, digging wells, and installing toilets in places that need them most. For example, in some parts of Africa and Asia, millions of people now have access to clean water thanks to these efforts. According to the United Nations, over 2 billion people still don't have clean water at home, so there's still a lot of work to do!

This is important because energy powers our homes, schools, and hospitals, and clean energy helps keep the environment safe. To reach this goal, countries are using more energy from the sun and wind and making better technologies to save energy. For example, in India, they are putting up millions of solar panels to bring electricity to villages. Right now, about 840 million people still don't have electricity, so we need to keep working on this.

This goal is important because more and more people are living in cities, and we need to make sure these places are good for everyone to live in. To achieve this goal, cities are building better public transportation, creating more parks and green spaces, and making buildings safer and more eco-friendly. For example, in Bogota, Colombia, they have built many bike paths and improved public buses to reduce traffic and pollution. According to the United Nations, by 2050, about 70% of the world's people will live in cities, so it's important to make these places nice and safe for everyone.

This goal is important because if we waste too much, we can harm the planet and run out of important things we need. To achieve this goal, people are recycling more, using less plastic, and companies are making products that last longer and are better for the environment. For example, some countries have banned plastic bags and are encouraging people to use reusable ones instead. According to the United Nations, if everyone lived like people in wealthy countries, we would need almost three planets to provide enough resources, so we need to be more careful with how we use things.

The reason we have this crisis is because of overexploitation, pollution and climate change. As water resources decrease, it is harder for people to find water for drinking and hygiene purposes. This results in viruses spreading and a significant loss of animal living in freshwater. The world needs to work together to fight this global crisis. We need to use water sustainably and prevent factories from polluting the world’s water reserves. Only if all countries work together, this crisis can be fought.

Mira Onaylı 6-H

Sustainable development cannot be achieved without significantly transforming the way urban spaces are built and managed.

Why are cities not future proof yet?

Most of the urban growth is taking place in small cities and intermediate towns, exacerbating inequalities and urban poverty.

In 2020, an estimated 1.1 billion urban residents lived in slums or slum-like conditions, and over the next 30 years, an additional 2 billion people are expected to live in such settlements, mostly in developing countries.

What are some of the most pressing challenges cities are facing?

Inequality and the levels of urban energy consumption and pollution are some of the challenges. Cities occupy just 3 per cent of the Earth’s land, but account for 60-80 per cent of energy consumption and 75 per cent of carbon emissions.

Many cities are also more vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters due to their high concentration of people and location so building urban resilience is crucial to avoid human, social and economic losses.

How does it affect me?

All these issues will eventually affect every citizen. Inequality can lead to unrest and insecurity, pollution deteriorates everyone’s health and affects workers’ productivity and therefore the economy, and natural disasters have the potential to disrupt everyone’s lifestyles. Air pollution caused affecting the health of millions is not only an urban problem, but is also affecting towns and rural areas.

What happens if cities are just left to grow organically?

The cost of poorly planned urbanization can be seen in some of the huge slums, tangled traffic, greenhouse gas emissions and sprawling suburbs all over the world.

By choosing to act sustainably we choose to build cities where all citizens live a decent quality of life, and form a part of the city’s productive dynamic, creating shared prosperity and social stability without harming the environment.

Is it expensive to put sustainable practices in place?

The cost is minimal in comparison with the benefits. For example, there is a cost to creating a functional public transport network, but the benefits are huge in terms of economic activity, quality of life, the environment, and the overall success of a networked city.

What can I do to help achieve this goal?

Take an active interest in the governance and management of your city. Advocate for the kind of city you believe you need.

Develop a vision for your building, street, and neighbourhood, and act on that vision. Are there enough jobs? Can your children walk to school safely? Can you walk with your family at night? How far is the nearest public transport? What’s the air quality like? What are your shared public spaces like? The better the conditions you create in your community, the greater the effect on quality of life.

Good progress has been made since the implementation of the SDGs in 2015, and now the number of countries with national and local disaster risk reduction strategies has doubled. But issues still remain and in 2022, only half of the urban population had convenient access to public transport.

Sustainable development cannot be achieved without significantly transforming the way urban spaces are built and managed.

Ada Tok 6/D

Goal 6 is about available and sustainable water in reach of everybody. This goal is important because of 2.4 billion people are living in countries that are water stressed. This countries and its people are in a really bad condition of water. This goal is also important because of this goal helps this kind of people. This goal already achieved several accomplishments like the population using safely managed drinking water increased from 69% to 73% and the ODA disbursements to the water sector increased by 10% to $8.5 billion. This achievements show that there is a improvement in the goal in a global way.also in my opinion this goal is so important to and not just the countries should do this. We, all of the people should try and do changes in their reach like changing our daily habits or by helping these companies. İn this way we can make water a reachable source for everyone.

İpek Gencer 6-E

The name of the goal: Life Below Water

Aquatic life refers to a variety of organisms, including animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms, that live and thrive in aquatic environments. In water has a critical structure in terms of biodiversity, ecosystem health, human health, economic development and climate. This life ensures the sustainability of natural cycles and provides the resources necessary for human survival. Protecting aquatic ecosystems is indispensable for a sustainable future.

If we want to achieve the goal we have to protect endangered species, reduce plastic pollution and raise awareness.

Examples: Plastic Bag Ban in Kenya

Action: Nationwide ban on the production, sale, and use of plastic bags.

Data: The ban, implemented in 2017, has resulted in a dramatic reduction in plastic waste, with up to 80% less plastic in waterways and the environment .

Example: Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Australia

Action: Establishment of a Marine Protected Area (MPA).

Data: The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park covers approximately 344,400 square kilometers and protects a vast array of marine life including over 1,500 species of fish and 400 types of coral .

I think I can contribute to the goal of protecting and sustaining aquatic life by advocating sustainable practices. My ability to process and analyze large amounts of data and disseminate information can help raise awareness

Ömer Doğru 6-F

This goal is to ensure access to water and sanitation for all. A lot of people don't have clean, good water and sanitation. The demand for water has outpaced population growth, and half the world’s population is already experiencing severe water scarcity at least one month a year. Water scarcity is projected to increase with the rise of global temperatures as a result of climate change. We could generate awareness of these roles and turn- ing them into action will lead to win-win results and increased sustainability and integrity for both human and ecological systems. For example In 2022, 2.2 billion people still lacked safely managed drinking water, including 703 million without a basic water service; 3.5 billion people lacked safely managed sanitation, including 1.5 billion without basic sanitation services; and 2 billion lacked a basic handwashing facility, including 653 million with no handwashing facility at all.

Ömer Doğru 6-F

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy. this goal is about ensuring access to clean and affordable energy, which is key to the development of agriculture, business, communications, education, healthcare and transportation. This is a very important goal that we can achieve which will help almost the whole world to have the modern energy source. We can expand access to electricity and clean cooking fuels and technologies, as well as improving energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable energy. The most popular sources of sustainable energy, including wind, solar and hydropower, are also renewable. Biofuel is a unique form of renewable energy, as its consumption emits climate-affecting greenhouse gasses, and growing the original plant product uses up other environmental resources.
