They costed the lives of hundred of thousands. Their were 13 crusades, and only the first and the third were successful. The Franks wanted to capture the land because Pope Urban the II wanted to capture it from the Turks. Pope Urban the II made/told his speech on 1095 A.D. The first crusade started in 1096. The soldiers wanted to do it because the Pope told them that if they died, the would go straight to heaven, and if they didn't die, the could loot the fallen soldiers. The death rate was so much, their wasn't enough space to carry all the dead body's on the cart! People ended up making trenches and catacombs and then just threw the bodies in.
