         <description><![CDATA[<div>1. <mark>Jay's Treaty: </mark>Agreement that provided England would evacuate a series of forts in U.S. territory along the Great Lakes; in return, the United States agreed to pay pre-Revolutionary War debts owed to Britain. The British also partially opened the West Indies to American shipping. The treaty was barely ratified in the face of strong Republican opposition.<br>2. <mark>XYZ Affair:</mark> A 1797 incident in which French officials demanded a bribe from U.S. diplomats.<br>3. <mark>Alien and Sedition Acts:</mark> Acts passed by federalists giving the government power to imprison or deport foreign citizens and prosecute critics of the government.<br>4.<mark> Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions</mark>: State resolutions passed in 1798 declaring the Alien and Sedition Acts unconstitutional.<br>5. <mark>Federalists</mark>: A term used to describe supporters of the Constitution during ratification debates in state legislatures.</div>]]></description>
