Sarah Grimke was born on November 26th, 1792 to Mary Smith and John Faucheraud Grimke. Her family was a rich, slaveholding family living in Chareston, South Carolina. When Sarah was young, she would teach the slaves how to read and then one day her father told her to stop. That was the day she realize how bad the slaves were treated. In 1819, Sarah and her father visited Philidelphia and she met some Quakers. She moved to Philidelphia to become a Quaker in 1821 and her sister joined her 8 years later.
