Her family was a rich, slaveholding family living in Chareston, South Carolina. When Sarah was young, she would teach the slaves how to read and then one day her father told her to stop. That was the day she realize how bad the slaves were treated. In 1819, Sarah and her father visited Philidelphia and she met some Quakers. Sarah and Angelina Grimke opened a boarding school after housing students in their home.
