The Red Scare was an event that occurred during the late 1940s to early 1950s. The Scare was from the United States fearing that the Soviet Union would take over the country with Communism. This was a serious threat to the U.S., that caused many to be afraid. In the United States, no great effort was made to separate these two political philosophies, for they both seemed to represent a single threat. They wanted foreign attempts to undermine the nation's government and institutions. "Using the derogatory term Red for Communist, the phrase is a form of criticism: it implies overreaction resulting from excessive suspicion, unfounded accusation, and disregard for Constitutional Law."

Citation:"Red Scare." West's Encyclopedia of American Law, edited by Shirelle Phelps and Jeffrey Lehman, 2nd ed., vol. 8, Gale, 2005, pp. 260-261. U.S. History in Context, link.galegroup.com/apps/doc/CX3437703696/UHIC?u=stev76221&xid=05d787bf.

The event that sparked the red scare was the bolshevik revolution during World War I."The origins of the first Red scare lay in the Russian Revolution and the horrendous experience of World War I." The Russian revolution was a wake up call to all of the democratic powers that were in the world. The spread of Vladimir Lenin was a potential threat to other countries, since he re-named Russia to the "Soviet Union".The ideology of the new soviet union was a threat to many."communism was not yet perceived as the only enemy;anarchism (the advocacy of violent overthrow of government and law) also caused fear." The idea of anarchism didn't resonate well with the US and many other countries at all. This Idea was completely terrible, and ended to be stopped.

Citation:"Red Scare." West's Encyclopedia of American Law, edited by Shirelle Phelps and Jeffrey Lehman, 2nd ed., vol. 8, Gale, 2005, pp. 260-261. U.S. History in Context, link.galegroup.com/apps/doc/CX3437703696/UHIC?u=stev76221&xid=05d787bf.
