Their relationship as friends deteriorates further when Max's sister, Grieselle, dies to the German troops in front of Martin. This saddens Max, as he thought Martin was his friend. The story moves on Kurt, who lives in the West. Kurt and his grandfather, Lothar, who happens to be the agent who tried to catch Marta, assists Kurt in escaping to the West through a checkpoint. The various relationships that were presented in both books caused the conflict and plot of the story. However, Address Unknown has a leader whose people trust him; they support his every decision. On the other hand, Escape from East Berlin has a government that is disliked across the territory it controls. 
Escape from East Berlin and Address Unknown have one similarity. They both were written to tell the story of how relationships affect people. Due to being separated from their loved ones, Kurt had to risk his life to get to the West, where his parents were.
