The 1950’s and 60’s were an important time for change for the African Americans in fighting for and gaining their civil rights. These were accomplished through the actions of the Civil Rights Movements.

Martin Luther King Jr was a very influential person who is best known for his “I Have A Dream” speech. This would be part of the peaceful protest known as The March On Washington when hundreds of thousands of people came to show their support for the equality of blacks. Summary: Although it had been 100 years after the civil war, African Americans still struggled with their rights. The movement started when the case of Brown v Board came up and people brought attention to the issues of their civil rights. This would lead to Rosa Parks standing up for herself who, in turn, inspired Martin Luther King Jr to take a stand. Many actions were taken by the movement and they often faced physical violence but they had a big win when the Voting rights act of 1965 was passed. Even though MLK was assassinated, the movement would continue to fight for their rights.

Brown Vs Board of Education

This was a Supreme Court case in which they ruled that segregation was not allowed through the state in schools calling it unconstitutional. This action overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson that set the precedent of “separate but equal”. (The civil rights movement website).

Jim Crow Laws

Jim Crow laws were what made legal segregation possible. They enforced segregation in schools, parks, buses, restaurants, and restrooms. When it came to civil rights, this is what African Americans had to fight. (History.com).

There were many different events and people who lead the way for change, most notably was Rosa Parks, who took the first step to fighting injustice. Then Martin Luther king jr came to rally everyone. An Important event is when Brown v Board of Education decided that legal segregation was not constitutional.
