Curved and Paved Roads

Both Santa Clarita and Levittown have resembling infrastructure. Roads were paved to make cars and its passengers ride more smoothly, compared to the dirt and hilly roads of the past. For example, in the Levittown article, it says it has "Paved streets...curved gently for further aesthetic effect, and to slow down auto traffic"(Kimball). The design appealed to the owners of cars, and Santa Clarita's roads are all paved due to the high percentage of cars. Also, the paved roads help the tires not wear down like dirt roads would. Traveling was very prominent among families, so paved and curved roads prevailed into the twenty-first century. Cars were very frequently used in Levittown and currently dominating the transportation in Santa Clarita to schools, practices or the movie theater.

Identical Housing

Additionally, the neighborhoods of Santa Clarita Valley and Levittown have identical homes. The houses are the same color, same layout and same architecture. The Levittown article states "your shape of Levittown house occurs in the same color once every twenty-eight times...two and one-half trees per home...lost among identical rows of houses along identical street blocks"(11). Just like Levittown, SCV has orange houses and trees showing up every few houses per street. The monotony of the streets in the neighborhoods directly compare with those of Levittown, both to encourage family accessibility and ownership of homes

Introduction

A lot has changed in the United States over the past 60 years; but have the suburban towns of America underwent major changes? The Long Island suburb of Levittown in the 1950's was popular among many families. Santa Clarita Valley is a modern-day Levittown to a fair extent because there are similarities in the structure but differences in the lifestyle of these two suburbias. Levittown, built between 1947 and 1952, was intended for families and made to be the ideal place to raise your kids. This is much like the purpose of Santa Clarita with its family orients and neighborhoods. However, SCV has more patriotism and tolerance for all ethnicities. Levittown, on the other hand, existed during a time of segregation and discrimination against blacks(Lambert)

Finally, Santa Clarita Valley is a modern-day Levittown to a fair extent because of the visual appearances and design of the the towns in each suburbia. This image of the Stevenson Ranch waterfall has become a household name and a landmark for Santa Clarita Valley that everyone remembers. This aesthetically pleasing mix of colors with the bushes and grass creates a strong appeal for the potential residents of Stevenson Ranch. Similarly, Levittown has innovative ranch houses with "a modern design 3 bedrooms on 1290 square feet"(Sehlin).

However....

The main difference between Levittown and Santa Clarita Valley is the acceptance of all races into neighborhoods and cities. Santa Clarita is only a modern-day Levittown to a fair extent because it has a diverse population and community of all ethnicities, whereas Levittown had no tolerance for anyone other than whites to live in the residential neighborhoods. For example, Bruce Lambert says, "[Levittown] is symbolic of segregation in America"(New York Times). These neighborhoods in the images presented, Westridge and Southern Oaks, are completely accepting of anyone who wants to buy a house regardless of the color of their skin. The author states that Levittown is a community of transition and began to lose its racism throughout the years. SCV was different in that it is founded upon togetherness and acceptance of every race. These suburban towns are products of different times in the society of the United States.

Furthermore, Levittown and Santa Clarita Valley are known to have leisure time activities involving sports, amusement, entertainment, and more. In Levittown, there are "shopping centers, baseball diamonds, parking lots, new railroad stations, churches, swimming pools, and various other places and activities"(Kimball). Santa Clarita also has these public facilities, especially the most popular, Six Flags Magic Mountain. It brings a source of entertainment to thousands of families per year. These two towns have continued the traditions of suburban attractions with the several categories of activities for kids and their parents, such as the very common participation in little league sports. The construction of Six Flags in Santa Clarita supports that amusement fits better in suburban areas and communities.
