The first R&D phase took place at Nofit State's Sabotage site in Bangor, from Sunday 5th June to Friday 10th June.

The second phase, 27th June - 1st July will take place in Coventry 27th June to 30th June to focus on preparing a performance demonstration and workshop for the public, as part of the Imagine Bamboo Summit, presented by Birmingham 2022 Festival, 1st-4th July 2022 at Sunset Park, Birmingham. You have to listen to it, and really yeild into it to It to get traction or rebound. There's a precarious trust in giving it your full weight which is always surprising when it holds. I find it interesting when it can support a person's weight in unexpected and unusual places, for example, when used away from the body as a shelf. I'm interested to explore the taller structures of the towers and ladders as the both give differing qualities at height. The ladder as is light' to base but sturdy at the top. The tower has a very precarious sway that I'd love to explore. One highlight was experiencing, and seeing, the growing play between eachother and our relationship with the bamboo, once we understood more how to listen to it.

The other was then sharing this play with the audience, both through the sharing, but also through the workshops, where they could experience it physically for themselves, and seeing people not want to stop playing. ALso, to share with the public stretches that they could do themselves and with others, at home, with a piece of bamboo.

I think in future, a restructuring and clarity of timetable is needed, especially when working with a new material, as fatigue is definitely a factor when it comes to injury, especially 'brain' fatigue. And agreed, a lunch that is more fueling/less bready.

Grains are good (and cheap too), potatoes and rice and lentils etc. Eggs and beans and salad.

There is definitely scope for Chinese poles and rigs, and bouncy things. Would be great to have a supply of bamboo and some time before the next project. Was good to preserve the unmistakable natural look of the bamboo but there would be more scope if we also used engineered bamboo and glue on some things. Looking forward to getting my hands on some more. First of all thank you for the wonderful work last week and for allowing me to be part of the research and play around the bamboo. I am really looking forward to seeing how the project grows!
The main discovery for me was in the importance of listening to the material and to its organic qualities. What can this material make happen? And not so much “What can I make it do that something else could also do”. I find that really inspiring and a very good creative limitation, if a tricky one to always stick to.
Going forward I would love to see the leaves involved, so the bamboo not just as a stick but as a whole grass. I would love to see how the leaves interact with the performers and the environment, but also what role they can play in the bigger structures that are being built.
I keep on coming back to the image of a suspended bamboo patch (with leaves too, some upside down) that the audience can play and interact with. I am particularly fascinated by the sound environment it could create.
I love that the structures are created and dismantled in the space by the performers constantly. And so I can see this piece as a walking journey through a vast space that the audience can follow along rather than something that happens in one point only.
