OSHA’s record-keeping requirements cite COVID-19 as a recordable illness, deeming employers responsible for recording cases if an a conformed COVID-19 case is recorded as defined by the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the case is work-related, the case involves one of more of the general recording criteria. Due to the difficulty of determining work-relatedness, OSHA implemented enforcement discretion to assess efforts in determining work-relatedness. If the employer is unable to determine if the exposure ocured within the workplace, they are not required to record cases of COVID-19 (Jilings, 2020). Therefore, it is undetermined if the true amount of COVID-19 recordings in the workplace were deemed work-related incidents during 2020, or an outside exposure and did not cause a citable increase in Form 300 filings.

Surveys conducted during the pandemic have found that many workers have been experiencing symptoms of burnout (which results from chronic workplace stress and can impact an individual’s motivation and productivity) and adverse mental health outcomes.

Roughly one third of U.S. adults report being essential workers during the pandemic, meaning they are still required to work outside their home during the pandemic. Surveys conducted in June 2020 found that although a substantial share of all adult workers reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, essential workers reported these adverse effects more often than non-essential workers. Essential workers, compared to non-essential workers, also reported higher rates of substance use and suicidal thoughts (Kamal et al, 2020).

From the surveys and data provided, we may determine that stress levels significantly increased within the workplace during 2020 as opposed to levels prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Some of the underlying causes of workplace-related accidents and illnesses include job tasks and procedures, work environment, management and organization, and the individual worker or workforce. When looking at job tasks and procedures, ensure that they are adequately designed to ensure safety and practicability. Management should ensure that an adequate safety program is established, resources, good communication, and a proper system for reporting problems are available to employees.

Reference:

Garcia, I.

In my old workplace accidents can happen easily if someone is not trained right and they could be minor injuries but also some could mean someone’s life. So, you want make sure people are trained right and the statistic I found is based on forklifts it was hard to get actually numbers on everything but knowing from experience there is training on forklifts and certifications. Now it states that close to 100,000 injuries happen every year due to improper training or carelessness. Now it also says that there are roughly only 855,900 forklifts so that’s not even 1 to 10 injuries a forklift. Now some of these injuries could be caught if trained right and taught how to inspect the forklift to make sure everything is working properly.

Forklift Safety: Facts, Stats and Tips for Safe Operation [Infographic].
