Sustainability to me means doing what we can to protect the Earth. Things such as saving water, recycling and saving energy. To me it is important to help the Earth so that we won't cause it more damage than we already have. One of the ways I practice sustainability is by unplugging cords I'm not using at that moment in order to help save energy. Also by picking up trash I see in public and turning off the faucet while I'm brushing my teeth in order to save water.

Hello class! My name is Kassandra Lira, I'm a sophomore at Stan State University currently majoring in nursing however am planning on changing my major to child development or psychology. I would like to pursue a career in social services or become an elementary school teacher when I graduate because I always knew I wanted a career where I was able to work with kids. Some of my favorite things to do in my free time is reading books and listening to music this helps me escape and relax. I also love binge watching my favorite shows.

I would also like to learn of ways others view sustainability.

Topic Proposal

For my topic proposal blog I chose to focus on the health of young adults specifically focusing on the negative effects of body image . This topic falls under the social pillar in the three pillars of sustainability. The crowd that is involved in my topic are young adults specifically high school and college students in the United States. This topic has changed and developed through out the years because of social standards that are put out due to social media which causes low self esteem. This topic is important to me because I have personally experienced this as well as seen it with people who are close to me. With this research I hope to learn more about the different ways young adults suffer with their self esteem and how people cope with it. I also would like to better educate myself with knowing what is offered to those suffering with this type of mental health. A question I have for my peers is whether they have ever suffered with an issue regarding their body image and how they are coping with it.

Rhetorical Analysis

This week I chose to analyze the article, "Everyone is tired of always staying silent" by Julie Lurie published by Mother Jones. The author's purpose was to show the audience how immigrant workers were being poorly treated in the agricultural community in the Central Valley specifically during the pandemic. This article follows the story of Veronica Perez who was a worker at Primex Farms. She talks about how the company had them working throughout the pandemic without any safety measures being implicated. She became an advocate for the working people in the agriculture community because she believed that the what they were doing, not informing them of covid cases in the work area and demanding they come to work with Covid-19, was wrong and wanted people to be aware of the situation.
The rhetorical device that stood out to me was pathos. While I was reading the article I noticed all the emotions I was feeling as I was reading the story of Veronica Perez and her coworkers. the author uses image, and stories to help convey all types of emotions. One line from the article that really stood out to me was, "They use you until you can’t give any more of you—and once you have a problem, they’ll get rid of you like you’re nothing." Many works are fired without notice or actual cause and many are too afraid to talk about it because they are immigrants and fear being deported. The circumstances these workers are facing is very upsetting to me and I believe they deserve to be treated better.
Julie Lurie is a senior reporter at Mother Jones who has been reporting for almost 8 years. She focuses on topics regarding public health and criminal justice. She studied at Yale University where she obtained her Bachelor’s degree in political science. The information she has provided is reliable and within her expertise. With the pandemic going on this article is important because everyone should be aware of the problems occurring.

Narrative about my topic: According to the traditional narrative surrounding the issue I chose to talk about, eating disorders are seen as dangerous and has been proven that it causes negative effects on teenagers. It is said that many cases of eating disorders are due to a negative body image caused by social media and when talking to the parents many were unaware of the problem.
The counter narrative: Whereas, my antithesis claims the opposite, that eating disorders are not a result of social media and that all this can be prevented if teens were to talk to their parents.
How this counter-narrative can help the problem I am writing about: Teenagers should be able to talk to their parents about the problems and feelings they have even if sometimes it doesn't always prevent eating disorders.
