Goal of interest: GOAL 8: DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH.

Goal 8 is defined by globalgoals.org as follows:
"Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all."

I am interested in this goal because I like economics, and economics are related to the goal. I also took interest in this specific goal while investigating about SDGs because I think decent work is very important nowadays because millions of people all around the world are forced to spend 8 hours a day in miserable work environments.

One global issue I brainstormed which is related to this goal is generational poverty, which is something that occurs in almost all countries on Earth. "Generational poverty" is when many generations of people never mnage to escape poverty. This global issue is related to my SDG because generational poverty is present because of the lack of decent work and economic growth. If all jobs provided decent salaries, and all countries were economically prosperous, generational poverty would not exist because all poor people would be able to grow their wealth by investing surplus from their sizeable incomes into the prosperous economies they live in. In short, generational poverty is a global issue that affects almost all countries, and it can be fixed if SDG 8 is met, which is why the goal of "Decent work and economic growth" is so important.

I think it is very important that this global issue is fixed because generational poverty is, for many reasons, detrimental to the development of society. It is detrimental because, for example, millions of people who come from poor families are forced to work all day from a very young age to bearly earn a livelihood. These excessive hours of work from a young age don't allow children to become fully educated (many children drop out of school) or to explore hobbies, sports, etc. This means that potential athletes, scientists, inventors, etc. waste their potential by having to work constantly.

The people affected by this problem are people from all around the world because all countries have a percentage of people who live in poverty. People who experience generational poverty are negatively affected by this because these people have to work all day to earn a livelihood so they can't explore their talents and hobbies, wasting their potential to be inventors, artists, etc. which could contribute to our society. I think it is very unfortunate that lots of talent must be wasted due to poor financial conditions that do not allow people to become educated or explore their hobbies.

I think one solution to the problem of generational poverty is teaching people (through educational videos) how to invest money into stocks, real states, businesses, among other things. This would make people understand how to grow wealth over time so they can escape generational poverty. My solution would help all people who experience generational poverty because everyone can invest their money. I hope that with my educational videos about investing people manage to grow their wealth and escape generational poverty. I also hope that, with my educational videos, people who previously experienced generational poverty can generate enough wealth to not have to work all day; therefore, being able to explore hobbies and talents.

Goal of interest: GOAL 14: LIFE BELOW WATER

According to globalgoals.org , this goal consists of "Conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development."

I am interested in this goal because I find it appalling that there is a plastic island in the Pacific Ocean that is three times the size of France (The Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch). I also like this goal because I think it is very sad that hundreds of animals in the ocean suffer because of microplastic consumption.

One global issue I thought about that is related to this SDG is the fact that microplastic contamination, which is caused by humans, is polluting our oceans. Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic that are formed with the deterioration of plastic waste. Microplastics that pollute our oceans are harmful for marine life because they are toxic when eaten, and they can cause damage to the respiratory systems of animals who live under water. The issue of microplastic pollution relates to SDG goal 14 because microplastic contamination harms life below water, which is what goal 14 wants us to protect.

I think it is important that the global issue of microplastic pollution is solved because this type of contamination severely harms many of the animals that form the ecosystems of our oceans. Microplastics, as I stated previously, are toxic when consumed or when they go through respiratory systems, so they can cause serious harm to marine animals, who are not used to seeing this relatively new type of contamination. It is crucial that humans find a way to slow down the rate at which they are contaminating the ocean with plastic because excessively polluted oceans might cause some species to extinguish, destabilizing food chains and ecosystems. Excessive pollution might even have the effect of causing a scarcity of fish for fishers. Microplastic contamination is exceptionally harmful for our environments because it virtually never decomposes or disappears, it stays in our oceans for thousands of years. This means that plastic contamination, unlike organic trash, accumulates and grows in our oceans every day without decomposing (just breaking down into smaller pieces which, as mentioned before, are called microplastics).

People from all countries of the world are affected by this issue because we all use resources (which are being depleted because of microplastic pollution) from the world's oceans. For example, basically all countries on Earth consume some type of fish; meaning that all countries are involved with this issue because fish and other marine life are currently under threat because of the growing amount of microplastics that are present in our oceans. I think it is very sad that marine animals in our oceans are being killed by microplastics because it is not their fault that humans are careless creatures. I say that we humans are careless creatures because we contaminate oceans with non-decomposable materials like plastic, without thinking of how much harm this will do to the animals that live in the ocean.

One thing I could do to help decrease the rate at which humans contaminate our ocean with microplastics is to make posters that encourage people to use degradable materials instead of plastic. This solution, if my posters are effective at transmitting their message, would help our oceans because replacing plastic with bio-degradable options means that our waste would now not last thousands of years in the ocean, and would instead decompose; therefore, not being a threat for marine life. My posters could teach about the importance of replacing plastic for other materials, and they could include information that shows exactly how to start using bio-degradable materials instead of plastic in day-to-day life. I hope that people who see my poster will become inspired and they will start changing their habits to reduce microplastic pollution in the ocean. I also hope that these habits are spread by reders of my posters to their
their family and friends. It would be ideal that as many people as possible follow the habits I will write about in my poster because only collectively, with everyone contributing a small part, can humans overcome the challenge of decreasing microplastic pollution in the ocean.
