I created a short 3- min welcome video and posted it on Bb. I plan to email it to my students once my class list is finalized. I introduced myself and showed them how to access our zoom meetings and my office hours. I gave a super brief overview of the course and asked them to bring either a pet or hobby to share during our first class meeting. I recorded the video using zoom and it was super easy. My goal for this semester is “high impact with low stress”. Best wishes to everyone for a strong start to Spring ‘21!

A welcome video via email and in two places on Blackboard (left toolbar and in the first week of assignments).I also open my course a week early so students can take a look, and even begin working on the first assignments (if they'd like).I find students are easily confused by Blackboard, so I let them know before the class begins that: a) each week will be posted in the left toolbar, clearly labelled with the due date for that week, and with all assignments/materials they need for that week inside of that one link, b) work is always due on the same night of the week, and c) each week is set up the same way--with a "to do" list, followed by 4 folders that are all labeled (and image-d) the same way, every week. To make this explicit for them, I created this infographic on Canva, which I include in their syllabus, in the first week of assignments on Blackboard, in my Welcome video, and in a welcome email

I create a short video that introduces myself and a little about me. I then invite students on the journey with me and let them know I will learn from their experiences, too. I end with a brief overview of our Blackboard site and how to navigate it. I then send a link to a Google Slide deck where each student enrolled has a slide. I ask them to add images, music, quotes, etc... that represent who they are and what their goals are for the future. I do the first slide myself as an example. These are shared, a few each class, for the first several sessions.

I have everyone in the class including me create a flipgrid (embedded into Bb) intro of themselves and ask them to respond to a prompt question that leads us to the first assignment. I've emailed them already and opened the Bb course last week for them to explore and also do their flipgrid intro, asking them all to take a look and learn about their classmates before our first class this Thursday.
