Benefit: Self-paced learning and accessible anytime. Give choice and autonomy.

Challenge: No facilitation from instructor, usually. Does not foster interdependent learning or collaboration.

Benefit: learning can be done with teacher but also increases student engagement with the lesson. Allows for data collection and immediate checks for understanding.

Challenge: need to have solid internet and takes for ever to load if put on an LMS. Also very clunky lessons and can prompt lack of engagement that way.

Benefit: The algorithm of these platforms is tailored to the viewer's interests, so the content served will likely feel relevant.

Challenge: The videos are very short and automatically transition once over. The following video may not be directly related to the lesson, which might pose threats to sustained interest and attention.

If you don't use the platform often, it might be overwhelming and not tailored to your needs. A learner might also be unaware of how to pause and stop the videos for a more personalized experience, and not know how to search for topics of interest. There is a learning curve for the platform.

Challenge: Can feel static or boring for learners who need interactive or dynamic content.

Benefit: Uses gameification to teach and practice math concepts to elementary learners. Supports grades PK-6 and is individualized based on learners’ skill level

Challenges: District-provided; sometimes more advanced students are practicing math skills multiple grades above theirs

Challenge: The questions repeat so they may simply remember the answer rather than actually knowing why the answer is correct.

Challenge: Primarily text-based; learners who need strong visual or auditory representation may not get enough support.

Challenge: Passive; no opportunity for live discussion or questions/clarification. If lengthy and not subtitled/chaptered, can be difficult to navigate.

Challenge: Not all personalization helps learning, not all pathways are equal

Challenge: Must create an IG account to respond, responses are open to public which allows any user to follow-up on with potentially negative, derogatory, or irrelevant comments

Challenge: if you put too much the student engagement goes down.

Given the tailored algorithm, comprehension of videos might be high if the topics being presented are familiar.

Challenge: As a consumer of content, you cannot control how the information/videos are created and what kind of accessibility and display options are available. If captions are not embedded in the video, they cannot be created by the viewer.

Challenge: Media is limited to text; there are no images, videos or audio versions (or) built in features for learners to add adapt the content format for their own use

Challenge: Hard to narrow focus of subject. Also requires a lot of production effort to make, which presents a challenge when trying to change the language.

Challenge: too much can produce cognitive overload and student engagement will go down.

Challenge: some don't know how to navigate it or may not have access if recently enrolled.

Challenge: Can be challenging to support multiple ways to perceive information (physical models, tactile options)

Challenge: There is an emphasis on winning. If you answer the question incorrect, you don't earn coins or place in the top 3. Some players might feel discouraged by this.

Benefit: Interactive learning, mathematical notation and graphing, immediate feedback, visualization of mathematical concepts

Challenge: Must have access to internet, no live instructor for real-time feedback to guide user or provide a different explanation for the topic
