The death of her brother haunts her for a while. Later in the story, Liesel's foster parents and best friend all die. Liesel is forced to grow up quickly in order to cope with the deaths of many loved ones. </div>]]></description>

In <em>The Book Thief</em>, the reader is shown what the Holocaust looked like for Germans. Therefore, the reader is able to see that not all Germans during World War II were bad. As shown in the picture below, Germans also lived in fear (not just the minorities).</div>]]></description>
