Experiences and/or witnessing physical traumas such as losing the use of a limb or having a traumatic brain injury can impact one's mental health. For American service members, one of the most prevalent medical diagnoses is post-traumatic stress disorder. According to research, the disorder has affected 5-20% of service men who has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Many people experience a delayed onset of symptoms once they have the opportunity to absorb what has happened.

Historian Philip Jenkins says religion played a big role in World War I, but people don’t talk about it much. Countries like Germany and Russia thought they were chosen by God, and many saw the war as a holy fight. Propaganda, stories of angels, and fears of the world ending kept people going. Jenkins believes this way of thinking led to later conflicts, including Nazism and communism. His research shows that religion and war have been connected for a long time.
