Thomas is the protagonist of this book. He is a determined, strong and brave boy, who even of all the things he has been through he kept going. In this second book Thomas is supposed to be killed by group B, but because he is very quick and smart in the moment of having to escape from someone or hide, he was able to keep Group B from killing him and his mates. Because of all the good qualities he had he was the ‘leader’ of the group, everyone followed as he said and he was very respected by his friends.

As regards to his appearance he has black short hair, brown eyes and he has a medium height. He does have a very intense look and he is very fast at the time of having to run.

Teresa

Teresa is one of Thomas' best friends. Thomas and her have feelings for each other, but during this book Thomas feels betrayed by her for being on WICKED's side and helping them to find the cure. But what Thomas didn't know was that she wanted to save him and the world, and she was determined to do it no matter which risk to take. This shows how confident and smart she was.

As regards to her appearance she has long black hair and beautiful blue eyes, and she is also medium height.

Minho

Minho is one of Thomas' best friends. Minho is also a kind of leader in the group, back at the glade he used to be one of the leaders. Minho is the most loyal character in this book, he is always there to help everyone and he can be trusted. Minho is very confident, but he doesn't think much before acting, that's why during the book you can see how Minho reactions have certain consequences.

As regards to his appearance he has black hair, black and thin eyes. He is a bit short, but very muscular as he is described in the book.

Jorge

Jorge is the leader of the first group of Cranks the Gladers ran into at the Scorch. At first he was arrogant and seemed threatening, but then there is a turning point and he helps the Gladers to get to the cure. Jorge shares some similarities with Minho, as they both are brave and impulsive.

As regards with his appearance he is medium height, brown eyes and has white hair. He is one of the oldest characters of the story.

Aris

Aris was the only boy from Group B. He became friends with Thomas because they shared some things in common. Aris is a very important character, he is telepathically connected to Teresa and Thomas because the three of them used to work all together in WICKED before going to the maze. At first he is a very mysterious boy and shy, but as the story progresses Thomas is able to get to know him and know everything about him.

As regards to his appearance he is short, blonde and has blue eyes.
