Children at four years of age fall into the pre-operational stage of Piaget's stages of cognitive development. At four years old, children use symbols through the use of objects and events. This means that they use one object or event to represent another object or event. An example of this can be using a rectangular block as a phone. Children explore their imagination through experience. Children at age four are also egocentric. This means that a child sees the world through their own point of view. Children assume everyone else's emotions match theirs.
