His father was a distinguished man and sent his boys to school where they learned liberal skills and it was thought that they would take over for him. Brunelleschi started as a gold smith abd sculpture. He was classicaly trained with Donetello and other famous artists. He had auditioned for a commion but lost to Lerenzo Ghiberti and shifted his focus to achetecture. He visited Rome with Donetello and this had a profound effect on him and his architecture.
