Leo is most popular for his works of art. Possibly his most popular is the Mona Lisa. But actually, Leonardo was an amazing architect and engineer. He created blueprints and prototypes of many pieces of technology, far ahead of his time. One of these being the helicopter, or aerial screw as he called it.

Leo's vision of a parachute was in a pyramid like form, instead of more of a cresent shape. Modern scientists think the wooden frame and shape of the device would lead it plummeting down, but a daredevil tried it and said it actually works just fine and maybe even better than modern parachutes.

Leonardo's ideal city contained a network of connected canals, used for commercial purposes and a sewage system. The roads of the city were to be very broad. Since Leo was still an artist, the buildings were to be very exquisite. The reason of this whole thing was mostly due to the plague Milan, the city in which he was housed, had recently suffered. But, since it required an entire city being rebuilt, Leonardo's ideal city remained only a dream.

Born on April 15, 1452, in Vinci, Italy, Leonardo da Vinci was the epitome of a “Renaissance man.” Possessor of a curious mind and keen intellect, da Vinci studied the laws of science and nature, which greatly informed his work as a painter, sculptor, architect, inventor, military engineer and draftsman. His ideas and body of work—which includes "Virgin of the Rocks," "The Last Supper" and "Mona Lisa"—have influenced countless artists and made da Vinci a leading light of the Italian Renaissance.

Young Leonardo received little formal education beyond basic reading, writing and mathematics instruction, but his artistic talents were evident from an early age. Around the age of 14, da Vinci began a lengthy apprenticeship with the noted artist Andrea del Verrocchio in Florence. He learned a wide breadth of technical skills including metalworking, leather arts, carpentry, drawing, painting and sculpting. His earliest known dated work—a pen-and-ink drawing of a landscape in the Arno valley—was sketched in 1473.
