Plot Overview

In the exposition, the author introduces the main character, Robert Procter, and also gives details as to what he is doing. An example of this is when the author says "two hours of driving had not yet produced the twinges of fatigue that appeared first in the muscles in the base of the neck" to introduce the thought of him driving. The rising action starts with the author saying, "The blue convertible swung out from behind the truck. It swung out without warning and struck his car near the right front fender, knocking his car to the shoulder on the left side of the Turnpike lane." This is the rising action because eventually this develops into what will be the climax. To start the climax off the author writes, "he heard no crash when the two cars collided head on at a high rate of speed. He felt something push into his stomach, and the world began to go gray." This was the climax because it was the turning point, and you never knew what would come next. The falling action is when the man in the uniform tells him he took the last part of his drivers test. The conclusion is when the uniformed man told him he fail and that he was sick, because it sums everything up.

Literary Elements

One literary element that was used is setting. In paragraph one, the text says "The turnpike curved gently ahead of him, lightly traveled on this cool May morning." This example of setting really helped set the atmosphere to start the short story. Another literary element used was atmosphere because a calm and cool mood was set through the setting and dialogue exchanged between Robert Proctor and his mom.
