I fell into the trap of relying on my PowerPoint presentations, which my co-operating teacher let happen in order for it to be a learning experience. When I was seeing that the students were drifting in and out of consciousness, it became clear that I had to revise my delivery tactic. I split my students into 4 or 5 groups, depending on the class size, and came up with a Jeopardy inspired game that would become a favorite review activity. Each group of students named themselves, and each individual in these groups were numbered from 1 through 5. Whenever I posted a question on the Promethean board, I would call out a number and that person had to answer it. I need to provide an environment that promotes tolerance for other people's views, conductive to higher learning, and that the students leave as better and more informed than when they first walked in. I see my students as individuals, each with their own learning styles and needs. If I am able to help them see their own potential in an increasingly cynical world, then I have been successful. Most importantly, as a social studies teacher I have an obligation to encourage what it means to be a better citizen in their local, national, and global community.
