Mrs. Hale knew Mrs. Wright as Minnie Foster, her childhood friend. This happy girl turned into an unhappy woman. Mrs. Hale regrets not spending  time with her friend, and has guilt over this. Maybe if Minnie  knew she had a friend that would stand by her, she would have reacted differently when the only thing that made her happy,  the bird,  was taken from her.
Mrs. Peters knew what it felt like to have something that she loved taken from her.  She empathized with Minnie's pain. She remembered what she wanted to do to a boy that killed her kitten. How could she condemn Minnie for what she did, when she wanted to do the same thing. Although she had a good reason to kill her husband, there is no reason enough to kill another.
