On the journey, Odysseus is greatly helped by mostly Athena, Circe, and Hades. Athena helps Odysseus by granting his wish "At evening came the shepherd with his flock,
his woolly flock" (Homer line 285), and escape Polythemus. While having to travel through either Scylla or Charybdis, Circe guides Odysseus through the sea monsters. Odysseus is told to go through Scylla "I sent them on toward Scylla" (Homer line 783), so he would only risk six men. Hades helps Odysseus's by telling him where to find Tiresias "in order to reach home he must journey to the land of the dead, Hades, and consult the blind prophet Tiresias", in order to learn his destiny.

After setting sail from the Lotus Eaters, Odysseus and his crew come upon The Cyclopses, who did not believe the gods. Odysseus brought his best man to a cave where one Cyclops lies. Once they arrived the Cyclopes took his rams and goats out of the cave, placing a boulder in the entrance. The Cyclops notices the strangers and a greek value of hospitality by eating some of the men, "Cyclops went on filling up his belly with man-flesh" (Homer line 241). They need to escape, so Odysseus prayed to Athena, Goddess of War, to help them in anyway, Athena delivers. But before his escape he makes a spike and grinds Cyclops's eye. The Cyclops then put the goats and rams outside. Odysseus's intelligence gave him an idea to hide under the goats and rams to escape. Odysseus gives his identity to Cyclops, which is further learned that Cyclops, Polythemus, is Poseidon's son. Polythemus wishes Poseidon for Odysseus's return home to be horrible. This situational Irony because it is unexpected for Polythemus to pray to the gods because he doesn't believe in them.

As the men approach the Sea Monsters, they're all very much frightened. Odysseus demonstrates great leadership by calming them down. He orders his men to pray to Zeus and to help them conquer these obstacles. Odysseus send the men toward Scylla because he is risking less of his crew. The mission goes as planned, "Scylla strikes... six of my best men from the ship" (Homer line 809), but his best men were taken off the ship.

Continuing the journey, a lightning bolt strikes the boat. Odysseus and his men now scattered throughout the area. The west wind pushed him back north heading straight for Charybdis. He didn't end up dead, but on shore off the Scylla mountain. He waited for Charybdis to spout and is his luck landed an oar on shore. So he was able to pass Scylla. He drifted in open sea for nine days and arrived in Ogygia, "nine days I drifted in the open sea
before I made shore, buoyed up by the gods" (Homer line 989),
where Calypso lives. He escapes after telling the Phaeacians his long and difficult journey, by receiving boat to sail back home.

Odysseus over the journey showed Leadership, Intelligence, and Bravery. All of these reasons are why Athena has guided Odysseus throughout his journey. Odysseus shows leadership, "You must think hard if you would conjure up
the fighting strength to take us through" (Homer line 1107), by putting Telemachus in the right mindset before killing The Suitors. More than once did Odysseus show great leadership on his journey, "Did I not keep my nerve, and use my wits to find a way out for us?" (Homer line 769), in this case Odysseus calms the men down by gaining their confidence back before going through the two sea monsters. Odysseus's intelligence, “trick came—and it pleased me well. The Cyclops’ rams were handsome, fat, with heavy fleeces, a dark violet,”(Homer 375).

helps him during the escape of the Cyclops. Bravery also shown by Odysseus in the Odyssey, "grind that spike in Cyclops’ eye,”(Homer 281), Odysseus takes the job to give he and his crew the advantage by stabbing his eye.
