Most kids have stuffed animals, some have tons of them, but, who created them? Their history starts with toys made from clay, wood, bone, etc… These were early dolls. But how did these figures turn into stuffed animals? A while after, people started making ragdolls, these were made out of linen, stuffed with old rags and papyrus. They were decorated with wool and strands of hay. The oldest found ragdoll dates back to the 1st - 5th century. These days the old doll can still be seen at the British Museum. Over the years, ragdolls became more popular, and more ragdolls were produced every day. Ragdolls were used for comfort, but also as tools for education: they helped kids learn nurturing skills and it taught them how to work with their hands by repairing them or sewing them when they broke. So, who invented the stuffed animals we know today? fast forward to 1880 Margarete Steiff made the first stuffed animal ever, it was a pin cushion in the shape of an elephant. she liked it, so she started selling them. Margarete’s nephew Richard Steiff joined Margarete’s business in 1897. In 1902 Richard came up with the teddy bear. Richard Steiff got his inspiration from teddy roosevelt on one of his expeditions where he saves a bear from being killed by hunters. The first teddy bear looked very realistic, and not so cute and cuddly, not really meant for kids. Later on as teddy bears started striving, they were given more cute features like smiles and big shiny eyes so kids could have them. Due to how popular teddy bears were, people started creating different stuffed animals, like bunnies, birds, dogs, cats, tigers, lions, and any other animal you can think of.
