Elie Wiesel does an excellent job of communicating the events that occurred in this section. The picture he paints is of a ragged group of people who have all but given up on living for a purpose, and only the fact that they are alive separates them from the dead; "We were nothing but frozen bodies. Our eyes closed, we merely waited for the next stop, to unload our dead." (Night, pg 100)
We think that this connects to the overall theme of the novel, and how compassion is necessary to the human experience. On page 104, Elie describes their entrance into Buchenwald; "Very close to us stood the tall chimney of the crematorium's furnace. It no longer impressed us. It barely drew our attention." (Night, pg 104). This illustrates the numbness that they feel, and how they do not feel connected to the world around them, they have lost their compassion along with their strength.

It was interesting how Elie's relationship with his father changed throughout the end of the story. In the beginning of this section he sees a boy beat his own father and prays that he will not do the same. As he grows closer to death however, he begins wishing that his father would die so that he would not need to be protected.

In the beginning of the story, the Jews were all bonded by a common fear but supported each other however they could. During their time in the camps, they were all basically stripped of all their emotions and compassion. By the end of the story, the Jews no longer cared for their fellow prisoners as shown by when they would literally kill each other for a few scraps of bread without hesitation. The concentration camps erased all human emotion and on the ship the Jews had their primal instincts revived just to survive.

I feel like Elie telling the story as he was young and through personal situations made the book amazing. Im interested to see what the second part of the book would turn out to be.

The last two pages of the book are 4 months condensed into just a few paragraphs. It's astonishing to see how everyday was the same, him saying "I shall not describe life during that period. It no longer mattered." The reader gets a deeper understanding of the repetitiveness and lack of energy he experienced for so long. We get this understanding because he was physically so tired that memories were not being formed. His mind was so not-attached-to-his-body due to his father's death and starvation.
