I currently differentiate activities and assignments in my classroom by scaffolding concepts/skills within the practice packets that I provide my students. I also always provide enrichment, extension, and challenge problems as well for those students to work on completing who complete their practice packets more quickly than others. I also differentiate these packets by allowing students to work through them at their own pace. Students also do not have to complete every problem. Students complete enough problems until they feel that they can demonstrate proficiency on that concept/skill. Dreambox is also utilized to differentiate activities and assignments within the classroom.
Unfortunately, I currently do not allow students much voice and choice over their activity or assignment selection. All students are required to work through their packets; however, students do have some choice when it comes to completing the enrichment, extension, or challenge problems. Allowing students more voice and choice in activities and assignments is one goal to continue working on for next school year. This is also one of the reasons why I chose to take this course. I hope I can get more direction in ways to allow students voice and choice within the classroom.
Unfortunately, self-directed learners are not given autonomy in designing their own activities or assignments. Honestly, I am not sure that any of my students are currently at that self-directed learning level. Having a student teacher has really put a wrench in my growth as a teacher and growth within my students. I am hopeful that next school year I am able to get my students to the point of being self-directed learners and then are able to try to give them autonomy in designing their own activities and assignments. Again, through this class, I am hopeful that I can gain knowledge on ways to implement this within my classroom.

Angela Vanderbloom

I've worked on differentiating for a number of years. I provide different levels of a text for one thing. For example, when I taught Call of the Wild, some students read the graphic novel, some read a modified vocabulary version, and some read Jack London's unedited text. Then we all came together to discuss things like theme.

I've also given students choice through big projects like documentary making. Students were able to either work on their own or work with a partner and pick a topic based on a personal cause or passion. This is some of the most amazing work I've ever done because I could see the personal investment of topic really pay off with students.
Heather Ko
