Reflection:

I truly appreciated how the writer examined the theme of loneliness from multiple perspectives. I was particularly drawn to the exploration of artists who, in their own lives, have experienced solitude and expressed it in their work.

The irony of feeling lonely in a large city is striking, isn't it? Despite being surrounded by so many people, countless individuals still feel disconnected and isolated.

I especially admire how Edward Hopper portrays urban isolation in his paintings. His use of color and space evokes a profound sense of melancholy, and I am deeply inspired by how he uses these elements to convey emotion. I plan to incorporate similar techniques of color, space, and composition into my own work.

The section on Andy Warhol was equally fascinating. His use of machines to mediate human interaction created a buffer that brought him comfort, yet also heightened his isolation. This resonates with how our current generation often relies on technology—phones and devices—as a way to feel less awkward and alone. We all engage with this behavior at times, but it raises an important question: does technology truly make us feel less alone, or does it deepen our sense of isolation? If we could overcome our fear of rejection, perhaps we might feel more connected to the world around us.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article, as it provided valuable insights into the biological perspective of loneliness. It raised intriguing questions about how loneliness impacts us as humans and what effects it has on our brains. Understanding our need for social connection from a neuroscience standpoint was particularly fascinating. This is a topic I may explore further in my own research and work.

I found this workshop really helpful because it made me think about the key themes and ideas I want to explore. I enjoyed using the visual language of the solar system, and being able to rearrange elements based on their importance was both practical and insightful. It helped me prioritise what requires more research compared to other aspects.

This is the outcome I produced during the workshop. Discussions with my peers and teachers encouraged me to think more deeply about my project, the research process, and how I should approach it moving forward.

Exploring the themes of my project from both micro and macro perspectives significantly broadened my research. Although it was challenging, it pushed me to think beyond my comfort zone and explore new ideas. Breaking down and scrutinising every point will help deepen my research. I found the macro perspective more difficult, as I struggle with thinking about the bigger picture, but it’s something I’m eager to improve. I'm excited to dive into these topics further and see how they will shape and reflect in my project.

Writing and sharing such personal thoughts wasn’t easy, but the session helped me better understand myself and reflect on how I naturally respond to different situations, offering insight into who I am.

This workshop was particularly valuable for my project, as it made me more aware of what matters to me and what occupies my mind. It also helped me develop a more personal narrative style. In my CPP project, I hope to explore themes of loneliness, immigration, and new beginnings in a deeply personal way. I also want to incorporate creative writing into the project, and this session inspired me to delve into the works of writers like Audre Lorde and Octavia Butler for inspiration.

To try to build a more detailed understanding of public attitudes to immigration the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford commissioned polling firm Ipsos MORI to ask a series of questions about immigration and immigrants to a representative sample of 1,002 adults living in the Britain. The survey took place during 2-8 September 2011.

The survey questions were designed to address two key issues: First, who do people have in mind when thinking and answering questions about “immigrants”? Second, do people’s views about reducing, increasing or maintaining the number of immigrants coming to the UK vary across specific groups of immigrants?

Results show that a majority of those favouring reduced immigration are more focused on illegal than legal immigration. Among those who want overall immigration reduced, a majority (54%) said that they would like reductions either “only” (28%) or “mostly” (26%) among illegal immigrants. Just over a third (35%) supported reductions equally among legal and illegal immigrants.

Those in favour of increased or constant levels of immigration were asked a different version of the question. They were asked if they support reducing illegal immigration even though they do not wish to reduce immigration overall. Results indicate widespread support for reducing illegal immigration, even among this group that did not wish to see immigration reduced overall. Among respondents who wish to see the overall level of immigration kept the same or increased, a clear majority (61%) nonetheless prefer to see illegal immigration reduced, and 39% felt strongly about this preference.

We don’t know how members of the public understand the term “illegal immigrant.” The definition of illegal immigration and even the term itself are matters of controversy. We also do not know whether the survey responses above are driven simply by greater opposition to illegal rather than legal immigration, or if overestimation of the relative size of the illegal immigrant population plays a role. Recent evidence suggests that many members of the public believe that a great deal of immigration is illegal – in one 2010 survey, 38% in one 2010 survey said that most immigrants are in Britain illegally (Transatlantic Trends 2011). Of course, even experts have limited knowledge of the size of the illegal immigrant population, but the best available estimates suggest that legal immigrants outnumber illegal immigrants by about ten to one. (Gordon and colleagues [2009] estimated a population of illegal or “irregular” immigrants in the UK and their UK-born children of 417,000 to 863,000 [central estimate 618,000] at the end of 2007. This contrasts with the estimated stock of 6.5 million total immigrants in the UK for 2007 and almost 2 million in London (Rienzo and Vargas-Silva 2011)

The data suggests that public opinion on immigration in the late 2000s wasn’t particularly positive, and this sentiment often influenced how welcoming and accepting British society was toward people of different origins. Economic uncertainty, media narratives, and political discourse at the time contributed to a climate of skepticism and, at times, hostility toward immigrants. This atmosphere shaped social interactions and added an extra layer of challenge for those trying to integrate into a new environment, often reinforcing feelings of isolation and exclusion.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Brick Lane because it highlights how immigration, belonging, and identity are complex and multifaceted. The novel resonated with me on so many levels, and there were numerous moments where I felt as if the story truly reflected the struggles of its characters. It does an exceptional job of capturing the experiences of both first and second-generation immigrants. Through the narrative, we see the tension between not feeling at home and the desire to fit in, as well as the resentment that can arise in the host country and the yearning to return to one's homeland. The book also beautifully explores the anxiety of trying to preserve one's cultural traditions while adapting to a new life. Overall, Brick Lane is a profound exploration of the challenges and emotional conflicts that come with the immigrant experience.

As humans we are emotional beings, and being as authentic as you can to your experiences and emotions helps to build connections with the reader. There is a lot I can take away from exploring this article, one being in my own project I will try to be as true as I can and perhaps in the process, I may find a couple people who resonate with my story.

Using an autoethnographic approach, Harrison reflects on his experiences as a language teacher, navigating identity disclosure in a setting where LGBTQ+ issues are often sidelined. He discusses personal challenges, such as handling questions about his personal life, and the broader implications of integrating queer identities into TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) curricula.

This level of introspection made the piece feel more intimate and raw, which is something I relate to in my own journaling. Like Harrison, I often find myself reflecting critically on my own actions and words, questioning how they might be interpreted by others. This personal awareness and vulnerability helped me connect more deeply with the writer's experience.

Watching this short illustrated poem was truly beautiful. I was captivated by both the artistry in the visuals and the animation. The poem cleverly merges science with social issues, challenging your beliefs in a deeply personal way. It made me reflect on how we are all inherently connected, having once started as one, but now separated by the complexities of life—distracted by the constant pings of technology and consumed by work and financial pressures. We were once intertwined with the world, a unified whole, but now we're fragmented into micro pieces, isolated in our individual pursuits.

I really enjoyed the flow of writing and how evocative it was. I appreciate how complex subject matters can be expressed and explored through poetry. This has inspired me to consider incorporating some form of creative, personal writing into my project—perhaps even shaping it as poetry. It feels like a meaningful way to convey my thoughts and experiences.

Her family were among the thousands of people who emigrated from Southern China to Southeast Asia during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The comic follows a trip from her home in Victoria, Canada to Xiamen, China in search of her grandfather’s birthplace. The accompanying text discusses the sketches that became the basis for the comic, and how drawing and comics can be used in anthropological research.

Reflection on The Namesake

My journey navigating multiple cultural identities has been a complex and emotional one, much like the themes explored in The Namesake. Gogol's struggles reflect many of the experiences I've faced, balancing two distinct, sometimes conflicting, worlds while searching for a true sense of belonging.

Like Gogol, I often yearned to fit in and, at times, distanced myself from my heritage to avoid feeling different or alienated. I remember wishing I had British origins just to blend in better, feeling embarrassed by my cultural background, especially when I wore a bindi. The teasing, the questions, and the need to explain my customs were all very overwhelming as a child.

Returning to my motherland has its own challenges, too. Even there, I feel like an outsider. My accent stands out, and I don’t understand my culture as deeply as my cousins who grew up in India. This creates a unique sense of displacement, I don’t feel fully at home in either culture. The question, “Where do I belong?” has often been at the centre of my reflections.

Ultimately, my story mirrors the broader theme of cultural duality and identity. Just as Gogol's journey leads to a reconciliation with his roots, I’m learning to embrace both sides of my identity. Each struggle has shaped me, and I’ve come to see strength in the blend of cultures that make me who I am.

Reading Chutney exposed me to a variety of creative approaches to presenting personal stories and articles, in visually distinct ways. For instance, some issues featured photos and collages, others relied on illustrations, and some combined both elements. What stood out to me from reading Chutney was the realisation that ideas can be presented either in a traditional format or a more abstract style, as long as the writing remains cohesive and works harmoniously with the visuals to effectively convey the message to the audience.

The trip to Dungeness was a fun and exciting experience. I enjoyed the stunning scenery and capturing the landscape through photography. My group and I focused on creating sounds using items we found, which added a unique layer to the experience. Overall, it was an engaging activity that allowed me to use all my senses to fully immerse myself in the atmosphere of the place. This trip made me realise the importance of experimenting with a wide range of approaches in my project, as it can spark new and unexpected ideas.

Reading Brick Lane has prompted me to reflect more deeply on my own experiences with immigration. It made me question why I sometimes felt disconnected from my British identity. Why did I feel like I didn’t fully belong to the culture around me? At the same time, it made me wonder why I also struggled to embrace my Indian identity. Why did I feel like I didn’t completely fit into that world either? The book has opened up a space for me to explore the complexities of my own sense of belonging, identity, and the pull between two cultures that often felt at odds with each other.

Thane explores the challenges faced by immigrants in balancing cultural preservation with integration. She notes how the younger generations, particularly second and third-generation immigrants, often grapple with dual identities.

After the Autoethnography and storytelling workshop, Mary suggested we explore attachment theory, noting that there might be a deeper reason behind why we chose to focus on our personal experiences. This sparked my curiosity and intrigue—perhaps there is a reason behind my choice. Delving into the psychology of it could not only enhance my project but also help me gain a deeper understanding of myself in the process.

Growing up as a child i had a very confusing experience trying to be both "Indian enough" for my family and "British enough" to go to school and make friends. At home, I was encouraged, sometimes even pressured by my family to preserve our traditions and culture, with warnings not to become "too Western". At school, however, embracing my newly learned British culture and showing pride in it earned me approval, not just from my peers, but also from the institutions around me. It often felt like a tug-of-war, forcing me to hide parts of myself just to fit in, like a chameleon blending into its surroundings.

As I grew older, I grew weary of trying to cater to others' expectations. I decided to discard both extremes and embrace what truly felt authentic to me. I love eating curry and rice with my hands because it’s nostalgic and somehow makes the food taste better, especially when it’s sambar. At the same time, I enjoy eating fish and chips on a Friday night with flimsy wooden sporks.

Finding my identity has been about rejecting the labels and ideals imposed on me by others and embracing the freedom to just be myself.

Life in the uk was very grey and muted for me. i missed you and all the colours that surrounded us. You were not only my guardian but also my best friend. I loved how we went out on our little adventures, walking, talking, meeting people. Even though I don't quite remember our chit chats, I remember feeling loved and safe in those moments holding your hand. My fondest memory of you is wanting to fall asleep on your bed besides you on your wooden bed and cashmere blanket.

Today, we shared our progress on our projects, which turned out to be a productive and inspiring session. We helped one another brainstorm ideas for our outcomes and discussed ways to boost our productivity. A common theme among us was the realisation that we often overthink and aim for perfection, which can hinder us from producing a significant volume of work.

We collectively agreed that setting more deadlines or time limits could be an effective way to address this challenge. For me personally, I realised that I know what I want to achieve , I just need to step out of my own head, embrace the creative process, and let go of the constant worry about getting everything perfect.

I decided I needed to write down all things I need to get done and select three or four things I can get done throughout the day.

I spent most of my time daydreaming, unable to understand what was happening around me.

I quickly began to learn the language, but I still struggled to keep up with the quick wit and conversational ease of those whose first language was English. Learning from my immigrant parents brought its own challenges—being taught how to say words with an accent or slight mispronunciations often made me feel like an outsider.

Throughout my school years, I tried to hide any trace of my native tongue because it made me feel foreign. But as I grew older, I came to see how fortunate I was to be fluent in two languages, a bridge between two worlds that I could call my own.

There’s an invisible debt that no one openly discusses, but it’s something you can feel deep inside. It’s the debt you carry because your parents sacrificed everything to start fresh in a foreign land, where they will always be seen as outsiders. As children of immigrant parents, there’s a constant pressure to do well, to succeed, almost to the point where you push yourself too hard. You live with a constant fear of failing and disappointing your parents. It’s a debt that can never truly be repaid, yet it remains with you, never fully leaving your mind.

Coming across a comic that doubles as an autoethnography was incredibly inspiring. This unique approach to collecting and presenting research energized me and sparked new excitement for my own project. Most of the autoethnographies I’ve encountered have been written narratives, so reading The Duck Pond was a refreshing and motivating experience.

In her research, Emily describes how she drew on her knowledge of architecture, culture, and history to reconstruct drawings of demolished buildings. This process required her to navigate uncertainty and create something new from incomplete information. Similarly, I need to embrace this approach in my project and not shy away from the unknown.

Reading this also prompted me to reflect on my audience and the broader purpose of my work. Who am I creating this for? What message am I trying to convey? What am I ultimately saying and doing with this project? These questions are crucial as I move forward and shape my ideas.

From this presentation, I learned the importance of being free and letting my ideas flow naturally, drawing everything out. Jen made a point about whether I needed to include 'everything I had gained' element in my project, especially if my focus was on immigration. After reflecting on her advice, I realised she was right, I didn’t need to include that part.

I initially planned to incorporate elements of sound into my project, but after some reflection, I realised it isn’t necessary to effectively explore and convey my ideas. However, it’s something I might revisit in the future if I decide to expand on this project later in my career

The interim presentation also highlighted the need for me to adopt a more critical approach. I decided to explore the theme of 'all the things I had to hide' as a way to convey my critical perspective.

On the other, I quickly realised how different everything was. Back in India, I had lived in a spacious house with my grandparents and enjoyed a large garden where I could play freely. In contrast, our new home was a cold, dim flat where I wasn’t even allowed to make noise, as it would disturb the tenants below. A few months later, I was relieved to return to India with my dad, I had deeply missed the warmth and familiarity of home.

This project has been an incredibly personal journey for me. Delving into these small yet significant moments and experiences wasn’t easy in fact, for much of the project, I felt quite uncomfortable. Sharing my stories with peers and teachers was daunting, and it took time for me to open up.

Participating in the workshop, embracing duality, helped me become more vulnerable and encouraged me to think more introspectively about myself and my identity. Talking about personal aspects of my life was challenging, but the supportive environment of the workshop, where everyone shared a little about themselves, gradually made me feel more comfortable and less shy.

At the start of this project, I struggled to make progress, largely because some of these topics stirred up strong emotions and made me feel avoidant. However, choosing this topic ultimately pushed me out of my comfort zone. Despite the challenges, this experience has been transformative and has helped me grow both personally and creatively.

The show explores belonging in a multicultural society, showing how the characters struggle to fit into both their family’s culture and British society. Although they live in the UK, they often feel like outsiders in both the mainstream British community and their ethnic group.

This raises the bigger question of what it really means to belong in a diverse society, a key issue in today’s discussions about immigration and identity. The novel highlights the emotional strain of feeling left out and examines the mental and social challenges of trying to meet clashing cultural expectations.

Psychologist Abraham Maslow, in his "hierarchy of needs," ranked belonging as the third most essential human need, following physiological needs like food, water, and warmth and physical safety. This inspired me to explore more about the psychology of belonging.

Researching the concept of belonging from a psychological perspective, coupled with real-life experiences of immigrants navigating their sense of belonging, has been both eye-opening and informative. Maslow's hierarchy of needs highlights that the yearning to belong, situated just after basic physiological needs of Food and safety, is a fundamental human drive. This underscores why the need to feel connected and accepted is such a powerful phenomenon for humans as a whole.

Our brains and bodies are wired for social connection, driving us to form bonds and be part of something greater than ourselves. From an evolutionary standpoint, the complexity of navigating numerous social interactions, relationships, and networks was so cognitively demanding, but also rewarding, that it necessitated the development of larger brains. Essentially, we evolved big brains to connect with one another. (Stephen Braren, May 24)

They allowed me to gain a richer understanding of the nuances and sensitive nature of my topic. I appreciated how each film approached similar themes in distinct ways. For instance, the show Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee explores the challenges of living in a multicultural society with humor and wit, providing a light-hearted yet insightful perspective. In stark contrast, Persepolis confronts the harsh realities of war and politics, showing how these forces strip individuals of their sense of self. This juxtaposition offered valuable insights into how different narratives address complex issues.

"A step change took place that year when two leading social psychologists, Roy Baumeister and Mark Leary, suggested that belonging is not only good but that the desire to belong is a deeply rooted human motivation that, underpinned by our ancestral origins, permeates our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours."

RB: "The core point of the belongingness hypothesis is that people have an innate motivational drive to form and maintain interpersonal bonds with other people. We called belonging a “need” rather than merely a “desire” because people who fail to satisfy it suffer various mental health and physical health deficits. We framed it in terms of forming one-to-one close relationships, but it can probably be satisfied by belonging to larger groups and organisations. These desired social bonds have two aspects: frequent positive or neutral (just not negative) interactions, and an ongoing framework of mutual caring."

"Although a need for social connection is an inherent part of human nature, some efforts to be accepted or to belong reflect efforts to achieve specific goals rather than an evolved need. For example, a business person might seek membership in a business association not because he or she desires acceptance or belonging per se but rather to make contacts that will increase business. The person doesn’t particularly care about this particular organization or these particular people, and in fact, he or she might detest having to go to group meetings. He or she is simply doing something that will be good for business.
An Unknown Girl - Moniza Alvi

The narrator's focus on imagery stands out, revealing her observant nature, this suggests that she is either new to or visiting this place, viewing it with fresh eyes. The line, "I have new brown veins," conveys her connection to Pakistan through heritage. It implies a bond that was always present but previously unacknowledged, and now she has the opportunity to discover it. However, she also seems to feel out of place. The description of their eyes that “stare” past the window suggests she is grappling to understand her surroundings while sensing that she, too, might be perceived as unfamiliar or out of place. The recurring theme of the "unknown" throughout the poem reinforces this idea, portraying her as an "unknown girl" uncovering and coming to terms with her previously unknown heritage.

While it doesn’t directly relate to my project, I found his approach to painting portraits of himself and others really inspiring. Since I’m drawing portraits of my family members, there might be something I can take away from his work.

What I Learned:

Bacon’s use of abstraction and distortion represents the emotional and psychological layers people choose to hide or reveal. I could experiment with using pencil strokes or color in my own work to convey specific emotions to my audience.

In her work Halsey merges past, present and future via her interest in iconography connected to the African diaspora, Black and queer icons and architecture. Halsey cites the collective sonic and visual layering associated with funk music as the blueprint for her approach to making, traversing time and drawing on a wide range of sources.

I really admired the maximalist approach to storytelling and how she aimed to pay tribute to her identity through her work.

What stood out to me was how the narrator uses short yet powerful words to address a significant and complex issue. The beauty lies in how not much is said, yet so much is conveyed.

Visiting Iniva was a wonderful experience. I had the opportunity to explore their library and browse through various zines and magazines. What stood out to me about Iniva was how most of their pieces centered around themes of immigration, belonging, and identity.

I had the opportunity to speak with the gallery manager, and we had a valuable discussion about my project. She was incredibly helpful and kindly directed me to some sources I can use for inspiration and further research.

For Unit 9, I've decided to research themes of immigration and loneliness, focusing on the shifts in environment from both past and present perspectives. I plan to explore this broad theme in a personal way, looking into aspects like food, clothing/textiles, sounds, and family relationships comparing them between "then" and "now." I also want to delve into words, language, and the emotions tied to moving somewhere new, as well as the unfamiliar objects and places that might intensify feelings of isolation during the journey.

Given London's rich diversity, filled with people from all over the world, I hope my project will resonate with others while narrating my own journey and experiences. Through storytelling, I aim to make these themes relatable in a way that connects with others on a personal level.

I hope to examine these themes through several critical lenses, including political and economic perspectives. By doing so, I aim to gain a deeper understanding of how immigration and loneliness are shaped not only by personal experiences but also by broader societal forces. This approach will allow me to explore how factors such as policy, economic opportunity, and systemic structures impact the experiences of individuals navigating new environments.

Reading this book was really interesting as Sardar critiques both Western society and South Asian cultural practices, offered

a balanced perspective. For example:

Sardar critically examines the systemic racism ingrained in British society. He highlights how immigrants, are often marginalised and subjected to discrimination in areas such as employment, education, and housing.

He also explores how the south asian community has a rigid adherence to cultural traditions which can create conflicts between generations, particularly as younger generations seek to balance their heritage with their British identity.

I really appreciated how Sardar examines both communities, as addressing identity issues effectively requires considering multiple perspectives. In my project, I aim to take a similar approach.

I chose these books because both authors share a similar immigration story to mine. Ziauddin Sardar was born in Pakistan, and Monica Ali was born in Bangladesh, and both moved to the UK at an early age, just like me. This connection is significant because having experienced life in both their countries of origin and the UK provides them with a deeper understanding of the complex emotions and challenges that come with navigating dual identities.

I really enjoyed learning about Aldwoth's work because 'Belongings 'combines themes of identity and immigration with deeply personal stories, much like my own project. I liked how she uses linen as her chosen material which belonged to her grandmother. The material itself carries the narrative, almost making words unnecessary. The story is visually and emotionally embedded within the material, which I find to be a fascinating and powerful way of working.

Working on the research poster was both enjoyable and challenging due to the limited time available. This constraint pushed me to think creatively and find quick ways to ensure the poster effectively reflected my project. Through this process, I learned how to tell a story subtly without relying on overly obvious elements. However, in the end, I felt that I relied too much on scattered words, which may have made the poster feel too direct. If I had more time, I could have experimented further with typography and phrasing to refine the overall design.

From the exhibition at Peckham Levels, receiving feedback and engaging in discussions with peers made me realise that my poster successfully communicated its theme.

This experience also helped me think more critically about my CPP. It prompted me to consider how I can convey a message visually without depending heavily on text. This reflection has encouraged me to approach my publication more thoughtfully, focusing on storytelling through design and visual elements.

This workshop gave me insights into the realities of working in editorial illustration. I found it quite challenging, as it was my first experience with this type of work. Going from initial ideas to a final draft, felt a bit rushed for me. I typically prefer to take my time to think through my ideas and drawings thoroughly. However, this workshop made me realise that in the professional world, you often don’t have the luxury of time and need to work quickly.

To be honest, editorial illustration didn’t quite resonate with me, and this experience helped me understand that it’s not something I see myself pursuing after university. That said, the workshop was great for training me to think on my feet and generate ideas quickly. I think with more practice, I might grow more comfortable with this way of working.

I enjoyed bringing all my work together and seeing everything take shape. However, for my next project, I would approach it differently by allowing myself to fully immerse in the visual aspects earlier on. This time, I became overly focused on the theoretical research and left most of my visual exploration until the end. Looking back, I regret this because I now realise I could have delved deeper into certain themes more visually. I’ll make sure to prioritise this balance in my next unit.

This project has helped me realise that illustrating nonfiction books is something I’m interested in pursuing after completing my degree.
