Takeaways from Susan Cain
1. Stop the madness for constant group work
2. Get in your own head and have a revelation.
3. Share your "suitcase" with others and grace them with your energy and joy!

An introvert in my classroom

In an ILA class, it can be overwhelming for an introvert to have to share personal narratives about their lives. This might be especially hard in the unit "Change in Me." However, this is an individual assignment that student's don't have to present in front of their peers.

I have tables in my classroom, so that might be hard for an introvert not to have their own space. However, we do start each class time with 20 minutes of silent reading and a chance to finish classwork from the previous day. This would be a great time for them to recharge.

Understanding Chad

Mr. Jackson should understand that Chad takes time to process and put together a thoughtful, complex response . While his thinking might not be obvious, allowing him the time to elaborate and explain can enhance learning and take it to more complex depths.

Chad excels at connecting concepts. He can provide great insight to text to self and text to world connections as well as helping others see the common themes within texts.

Final Reflection

I asked a student what the word "perfect" meant and he replied, "Jesus." I was thankful that I took the time to ask him to clarify what he meant by that. His connection to the word was based on his faith that Jesus led a "perfect" life.

As an extrovert, I forget that the constant interaction with others can be draining for some students. Where we are encouraged to have students collaborate and be "future ready" as teachers, it's also important to find the balance for our students and their needs within their personality and learning styles.

This course changed my thinking about extending think time, providing alternate ways to react to information, and differentiation for introverted learners within group projects. This introversion topic is like a burrito because there are lots of "ingredients" that each child brings to the classroom and different ways to "assemble" the information to wrap up learning.

Take away from Adam Grant
Introversion-extroversion is rooted in our physiology and can help us understand how we function in work and life. It's one of the first things people notice about how you interact with others. We can become aware of other people's differences and appreciate them through communicating differently.
