She was inspired to write this book after visting MLK's childhood home, where she didn't find any information about his mother, who was a civil rights advocate herself. In March of 1955, she was arrested at age 15 for refusing to give her seat up to a white woman. Her protest happened months before the Rosa Parks bus incident, but she wasn't credided by the public because she didn't have "good hair", she was an unmarried, pregnant teenager, and many more reasons. They wanted to make sure the most "appealing" protesters were seen.

She died of cervical cancer in 1951 at John Hopkins Hospital where doctors removed her tumor, and without her consent, removed a sample of her cells. After she passed, they discovered her cells were "immortal" & able to reproduce infinantly without dying. The first and only human cells able to do this. They kept her cells and continued running tests on them despite her husbands wishes, and made huge scientific discoveries. They've helped with the discovery of vaccines like polio and COVID-19. They've even sent her cells to space, but sadly, this was all without the knowlege or consent of Henrietta or her family. It was an expirement done to see the result of syphillis left in the body untreated. They used African-American men as test subjects and lied to them saying they had "bad blood". In return, the men would receive free meals, healthcare, etc. None of the men consented to the true expirement, and when a treatment was discovered for the disease, the men were denied it. They continued gathering fellow classmates to join them in their protest to end segregation. This inspired many other people across the country to do so. She was one of the founders of the Gay Liberation Front, and spent years fighting for equal rights. She was a co-founder of the group committee, S.T.A.R (Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries) where they assisted homless transgender youth. Marsha often explained that the "P" in her name stood for 'pay it no mind', and it was a response to the many people who asked and pressuered her about her sexuality and identity.
