Susan Hohman I am teaching in class this year. Last school year I communicated with my students through google hangouts. I would video chat with the students during the school day. I did have the students do a few flipgrids but some of the students did not feel comfortable video taping themselves so I tried to reach out to them either by Zoom or google hangout chats.

I have been using Remind with my parents this year and have found it to be an easy way to communicate back and forth. On my remote days, I will start a Google Meet (for a given hour) and let my students and parents know that they are welcome to drop in if they have questions or just want to touch base. It's very informal but has been an easy way to communicate and stay in touch on days we are not on campus.

Targeted small group instruction is easier to deliver to our on-campus students. However, synchronous sessions with digital only students is harder. We also did our first round of home visits last week to help bridge the gap. I hope to host some synchronous sessions with my digital EL's soon.

Last year at Midway we were introduced to W.I.N. Time (Whatever I Need) instead using the term RTI. This small change in the name was also a change in mindset and how the kids responded to this time of day. Instead of comments like "Why are they working on THAT book instead of this one?" I started hearing kids say "that's what he/she needs". I set goals with each student on areas of need and every week we check for progress and set new goals when the first ones are met. The goal setting has helped motivate the kids to work hard and put some extra effort in so they can be celebrated on Fridays. As I am finishing my assessments we have been talking about goals and how we plan to keep track of them.

Morning Meeting Routine

I've found having a morning meeting to follow a morning routine in the classroom as close as possible being remote has been beneficial for both my students and I. We first have calendar and the Pledge of Allegiance. We then go to our announcements, important things to know/remember, followed by our learning path for the day. I then ask if anyone has questions, regarding our to do list today, answer any of those, then allow time, usually about 5-7 minutes, for them to share things they are excited about at home, school, life in general. They get a chance to talk and praise each other and they love it. I've seen my morning numbers grow every week as a result.

I've found similar things as others here. Some days I am working with students or parents or both during the whole office hours schedule (I've set it on Wednesdays from 1-2:30pm), and other days it has been silent. During that time I usually have an open zoom call, but I've muted and shut off my camera so I can keep responding to emails, parent remind messages, and student Hangouts/GoGuardian messages.

I start our school day with a Class meeting. This is where we have a chance to greet each other, check how our day is going, and I review the day's lessons asking for questions/comments as we go through them. The second set of meetings are for Reading. I have one for each school. The last meeting is at the end of our day. This is where we get a chance to do something fun (virtual field trip, show & tell, Simon says, etc.) and share how our day went. I have found these extremely useful to connect with my students.

I like Office Hours. This is a time where parents and/or students are able to just join me to answer questions, get clarification, talk, get help, etc. Some days are busier than others.

We begin our day with a whole class meeting. We begin the day with a song that connects to our growth mindset theme for the month. Then, I do a quick check in (thumbs up/to the side, etc), followed by answering any questions. Finally, usually play a game together or read a book. As we have established community, I will be adding more tie-ins with the lessons in the core subjects.

Office hours are helpful, though it is usually feast or famine. I do enjoy the opportunity to see them one-on-one and address any questions/concerns. I have also used this time to speak with students I see on GoGuardian but haven't been able to see in meetings, encouraging them to join Zoom for any questions or complete the diagnostic testing that is incomplete.

We do an asynchronous class meeting every remote day that aligns with our class meeting in the classroom. We go over the calendar and important days. Then I do read aloud. We also take turns sharing and this happens at 11:00 am during synchronous class meeting via Zoom. It is important to me that we maintain the same routine remotely just like we do in the classroom!

I am going to start small group instruction this week. I am still having troubles with about 40% of my class not doing the core instruction every remote day. Therefore, my main goal right now is to get every student doing the core instruction. For my high students that accessing the content everyday we are going to start a book study this week with The One and Only Ivan! My low kiddos are the ones not even getting online, so that is a huge work in progress.

Parents do not utilize my office hours rather find it helpful to receive asynchronous video, much like the kiddos! My parents and students reach out to me from 9:00am-3:30 intermittently via Class Dojo and Go Guardian. I do not mind this at all. I would prefer this over only being available a more restricted time. I have set strong boundaries and my parents and students have maintained them so far! I have found that Go Guardian is a wonderful tool. I can see and solve a problem happen in real-time and collaborate with the child or parent to fix it! Parents also hang around after class Zoom meetings and I answer and questions at that time too! I also model EVERYTHING. I want my parents to have access to all the content and all the strategies and answers. This allows my low-lows to access all the grade-level content via pure modeling. This allows my highs to practice independently and then check their work with my modeling of the content. Many of my parents even watch my videos before their kiddos so they understand the math and can help their child.
