This small change in the name was also a change in mindset and how the kids responded to this time of day. Instead of comments like "Why are they working on THAT book instead of this one?" I started hearing kids say "that's what he/she needs". I set goals with each student on areas of need and every week we check for progress and set new goals when the first ones are met. The goal setting has helped motivate the kids to work hard and put some extra effort in so they can be celebrated on Fridays. Some days I am working with students or parents or both during the whole office hours schedule (I've set it on Wednesdays from 1-2:30pm), and other days it has been silent. During that time I usually have an open zoom call, but I've muted and shut off my camera so I can keep responding to emails, parent remind messages, and student Hangouts/GoGuardian messages.

This is where we have a chance to greet each other, check how our day is going, and I review the day's lessons asking for questions/comments as we go through them. The second set of meetings are for Reading. I have one for each school. The last meeting is at the end of our day. This is where we get a chance to do something fun (virtual field trip, show & tell, Simon says, etc.) and share how our day went. We begin the day with a song that connects to our growth mindset theme for the month. Then, I do a quick check in (thumbs up/to the side, etc), followed by answering any questions. We go over the calendar and important days. Then I do read aloud. We also take turns sharing and this happens at 11:00 am during synchronous class meeting via Zoom. It is important to me that we maintain the same routine remotely just like we do in the classroom!

I am still having troubles with about 40% of my class not doing the core instruction every remote day. Therefore, my main goal right now is to get every student doing the core instruction. For my high students that accessing the content everyday we are going to start a book study this week with The One and Only Ivan! My low kiddos are the ones not even getting online, so that is a huge work in progress.

My parents and students reach out to me from 9:00am-3:30 intermittently via Class Dojo and Go Guardian. I do not mind this at all. I would prefer this over only being available a more restricted time. I have set strong boundaries and my parents and students have maintained them so far! I have found that Go Guardian is a wonderful tool. I can see and solve a problem happen in real-time and  collaborate with the child or parent to fix it! Parents also hang around after class Zoom meetings and I answer and questions at that time too! I also model EVERYTHING. I want my parents to have access to all the content and all the strategies and answers. This allows my low-lows to access all the grade-level content via pure modeling. This allows my highs to practice independently and then check their work with my modeling of the content.
