         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Motor unit = a nerve cell (neuron)+ muscle fibers</li><li>In PPS there is degeneration of individual nerve terminals in the motor units</li></ul><div><br>1) Poliovirus attacks neurons in brainstem and spinal cord. <br><br>2) Surviving neurons create new terminals to supply orphaned muscle fibers. <br><br>3) This results in recovery of some muscle movement and enlarged motor units<br><br>4) Years-decades of excessive use of enlarged motor units adds stress to neurons.<br><br>5) Neuron fails to maintain metabolic demands of all the new pathways, resulting in motor units slowly deteriorating.<br><br>6) Eventually, nerve terminals malfunction and permanent weakness in <strong>any </strong>skeletal muscles occur.</div>]]></description>
