They have definitely been exposed, but have they been taught it? I often see our staff pull a student aside and tell them what they did was disrespectful and then pose the question, “Do you realize what you said or did was disrespectful?”  I do wonder at times is it as simple as a case of them not knowing.

I tell my kids I love them and even though at times I am happy to see them move the ladder to the next grade they still have a piece of my heart and they ALL know they have a safe place to come to. On the whole I keep a positive attitude and show enthusiasm in order to manage "students' states". I do sometimes get discouraged when I look at students' outward faces that may not show emotion. But then I realize this doesn't mean they are not connecting because I remember when I was a student in high school -- I was a good listener & understood what was happening, but I was too self-conscious and uncomfortable to show emotion in class.
